Turn off Backup notifications?

  • Unknown's avatar

Recently, WordPress is driving me nuts with notices that the backup version of a post is different than the one I just saved. Well of course it is, I just saved a new one! I click the ‘x’ to remove this from the page, only to have it pop up again with the next save. Is there any way to turn off these notifications? Also, it keeps bugging me to try the ‘new easier way to write posts’ which I have tried and do not like. Is there a way to permanently remove these notifications? I just don’t need them and they are getting annoying.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • As far as I know, there is no native feature on WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) sites that disables this.

I tried looking for WordPress plugins that can achieve this, but there is no such plugin, I guess.

Autosave on WordPress is an intentional feature and is supposed to help you retrieve previous revisions should you need it. I can understand your frustration with this feature popping up very often, but I encourage you to read about Autosave on this help article https://en.support.wordpress.com/autosave/ and it might help you understand this feature better.

Yes, I know what Autosave is, what it does, and why. I already understood this, and referencing an article on the feature isn’t helpful. Understanding the feature doesn’t decrease the irritation at the constant notifications. The software writers need to stop trying to help so much with all these unnecessary notices.

    Hi there @fnpcarole

Is there a way to permanently remove these notifications?

If you are writing in the WP Admin Post/Page Editor, there is no way to turn off the suggestion to try the new and improved editor. Sorry for no better news; it’s been requested by us diehard users of WP Admin previously.

About the “there’s a newer version of this post in your browser” notice each time you save, can you please try logging out of WordPressdotcom, clearing your browser’s cache and cookies (which will also log you out of every other site you are currently logged into) and see if that doesn’t make the notice go away. If you are still seeing this notice after you log back in to WordPressdotcom, let us know what browser and OS you are using.

  • Good morning –

Thanks for taking the time to share this feedback. Please give justjennifer’s advice a try about making the notice disappear.

My cache clears every time I close the browser. The problem continued for two days, through two closures and then restarting the next day, and now I don’t see it anymore today. So, I guess whatever was causing it is cleared.

  • Awesome! Well, I am going to leave this thread open in case the issue comes back in the next few days.

Well, it is back again. Is there a way to post a screen shot? It is generated by WordPress, not my browser.

“The backup of this post in your browser is different from the version below. This will replace the current editor content with the last backup version. You can use undo and redo in the editor to get the old content back or to return to the restored version.

    Post draft updated. Preview post”

Hi there, I’m sorry to hear you are having this issue again.

While I don’t have any other suggestion beyond what I already suggested I did want to let you know that today for the first time ever in the WP Admin Post Editor, the “Try the New and Improved Editor” notice was gone (on a PC/Win10Pro/Chrome62). /quietly shouting Huzzah!

  • Hi there,

A screenshot would be nice to help us troubleshoot this issue.

Here’s how to take a screenshot:

    Take a Screenshot

Once you have taken your screenshot upload it to your media library and let me know so I can have a look.

I know how to take a screenshot, I have one as I mentioned. I don’t know how to post it here as there doesn’t seem to be a button to do so.

Hello again, You should upload it to your Media Library and Staff can then take a look at it.
