Turning off mandatory registration to get likes or follows
-
I’m getting a lot of hits but not a lot of follows. My husband said that it prompts you to register when you try and “like” my blog post or follow me and that is turning away users unless they are already bloggers. How do I turn this feature off? I want people to just hit follow or like without having to register.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
-
You can’t. The like button is an in house feature. Unless the visitors have registered a WordPress.com/ Gravatar account they cannot use it. In other words it’s the same here as it is a Facebook and other similar sites with like buttons.

Oh. Wish I had known that. That’s kind of limiting for a blog. How about if they want to follow the blog? They need to be registered?
-
Not if you set up email subscriptions. You can set up email subscriptions here > Appearance > Widgets > Follow Blog Widgets by using this guide > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/
If you would like a follow button to appear on the bottom right hand corner of your site for those who do not have WordPress.com accounts go to > Settings > Reading and scroll down to Follower Settings:
These settings change emails sent from your blog to followers.
Logged out users __ Show follow button to logged out users.Checking this will present a follow button to logged out users in the bottom corner of their screen.

No. That’s not what you read here http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/follow-blog-widget/ now is it?
Readers not logged in to WordPress.com will see a follow button on the bottom right corner of your site if you have the follow blog button activated at Settings -> Reading.
So they click the button and enter their email address. Easy peasy.

Right, I understand that. They still have to give their information (email address) – a lot of people would prefer not to give information. It’s very limiting.
