Twenty Eleven child Comments page sizes

I have a blog in the staff side of a university site, so I am unable to share it (login required). I can share screenshots to show what I’m trying to do (below).

    1) On the home page, I have one little dark gray area above the post date and below the menu bar. I like the space it creates between the text and the menu, but would like to control the color so that it doesn’t appear as a bar (in this case, I would need to make it black #000000)

    2) On the Comments page for any post, the post date and the previous/next link extend far beyond the edge of the blog. I’d like them to align with the post, which is aligned with the menu bar. Also, the actual Comments box is much smaller than the post. I would like it to resize so that it touches the edge of the blog.

Our universty WP blogs have WooDojo, so I am able to add custom CSS. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. – Ken Hopson

Oh, sorry. I thought I went to a Twenty Eleven forum, didn’t notice it was for .coms specifically.
