Twenty Eleven, featured and recent posts

    Hi,

    I am trialing Twenty eleven, particularly the home page, and have the CSS upgrade. I have a few questions for whoever is able to help:

    – Is it possible for any rich text (i.e. bold, bullet points, maybe even image) to show immediately on the home page, rather than after clicking on the ‘continue reading’?
    – Can I remove this ‘continue reading’ altogether, so that my post, which is not so long, appears in whole within the featured box?
    – Is it possible to change the titles ‘features posts’ and ‘recent posts’, and eventually even highlighting it somehow (e.g. bigger characters, other colours, etc)
    – For the ‘recent posts’ at the bottom of the page, I’ve noticed that only the titles are available, and clicking on one opens a new page to read the whole post. Is there any way that these posts can either remain open (i.e. title and text), or that it opens when hovering on the title?

    Maybe some of these questions are a big ask, but I thought I’d try anyway.

    Thanks,

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I have flagged this thread so it will be moved to the CSS editing forum for you. I would like to suggest that you read this article so you are clear about how the Twenty Eleven theme is designed to operate. We cannot edit templates or themes. CSS editing can only be used to change appearance; it cannot be used to change functionality.

    Hi Timethief.

    Thanks for sharing this link. But if I understand correctly, I should be able to change title names, right? The rest cannot be achieved?

    Cheers

  • Unknown's avatar

    The only thing that can be done is “bigger characters, other colours, etc”. The rest aren’t CSS issues.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi justpi. Sorry, is this in reference to the titles? As in, the only aspect of the title I can change is bigger characters or altering the colour? If I can’t remove the title altogether, is there a way I can at least change the name?

    If you are expecting to be able to click a button and change fonts throughout your blog then it’s not that easily done. These are 3 ways to change fonts on wordpress.com blogs.

    (1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the HTML editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/

    (2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2

    (3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Custom Design upgrade and using Typekit Fonts with Staff support. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/

    Note: A few themes do provide for changing font color in the Blog Title and/or optional Tagline and/or links. In the majority of themes font changes to font families, colors and size in the blog title, tagline, menu, post titles, page titles, categories and tags, widget headings, comments, and links cannot be done without CSS editing.

    If I can’t remove the title altogether, is there a way I can at least change the name?

    You can change your blog title and/or optional tagline at any time on this page > Settings > General if you remove the Blog Title you may have trouble with getting your content indexed by search engines as that’s where search bots expect to locate it. On Twenty Eleven > Appearance > Header note that the option to not display the blog title exists.

    My reply was in reference to your complete original question. Of all the things you listed, changing the font-size or the font color etc is the only thing that can be done via CSS editing. In your reply you added something else: removing the names. Yes, that’s also possible.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Perfect. In that case, can I kindly ask how to do it? In other words, how do I remove (or better, replace if possible), ‘featured post’ and ‘recent posts’. What about ‘comments off’ in the recent post section, can those also be removed?

    And finally, I saw elsewhere in the forums someone asking about altering some other features of Twenty Elven, but couldn’t find anything that responds to the following: is it possible to shade each of the 3 sections of my home page (the static part on top; the featured posts; and the recent posts) with 3 different shades of grey? Or failing that, emphasise the separating line between those sections a bit more? This would help attract the reader’s attention to the different sections?

    Once again, your help and comment is of great help!

    When you are using the Showcase Template for a page on the Twenty Eleven theme, the formatting like bold and bullet points is not displayed. The formatting is shown, however, for other types of layouts. For example, see the Twenty Eleven demo page at http://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com/

    To find out more about the different layout options available for Twenty Eleven, see http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/

    Can I remove this ‘continue reading’ altogether, so that my post, which is not so long, appears in whole within the featured box?

    You can’t remove that for the Featured Posts area of a Showcase Template in Twenty Eleven. This is because the Showcase Template is designed specifically to show a short snippet of text that fits within a limited slider area. Other layout options do show the whole post.

    You could hide the continue reading link for Featured Posts on Showcase Template pages, but I wouldn’t recommend doing that.

    Is it possible to change the titles ‘features posts’ and ‘recent posts’, and eventually even highlighting it somehow (e.g. bigger characters, other colours, etc)

    You can do this with a CSS trick, try this out on your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS page and click the Preview button to see how it works:

    .featured-posts .showcase-heading {
    visibility: hidden;
    }
    .featured-posts .showcase-heading:before {
    visibility: visible;
    content: "New Title";
    color: hotpink;
    font-size: 2em;
    }

    Adjust the color and font size as necessary. Here is a list of colors: http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-color/#svg-color

    Not in the Showcase Template version of a page. You would have to pick a different layout. Sounds like you don’t really like the Showcase Template! you might consider turning it off. :)

    Is it possible to shade each of the 3 sections of my home page (the static part on top; the featured posts; and the recent posts) with 3 different shades of grey?

    Indeed. If you are still using the Showcase Template, you can use this CSS to change the shading color of the top part:

    article.intro {
    background: beige;
    }

    For the Showcase Template in Twenty Eleven, you can use this CSS to change the shading for the Featured Post area:

    .featured-posts, .featured-posts section.featured-post, .featured-post .feature-text::after, .featured-post .feature-image.small::after {
    background: azure;
    }
    article.intro {
    margin-bottom: 0;
    }

    To change the recent posts background color in the Showcase Template of Twenty Eleven, try this CSS:

    section.recent-posts {
    padding: 1em;
    background: honeydew;
    }

    For more color names, see http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-color/#svg-color

  • Unknown's avatar

    Or failing that, emphasize the separating line between those sections a bit more?

    For bigger separators between main areas in Showcase Template pages for Twenty Eleven, try this:

    article.intro {
    border-bottom: 5px solid black;
    }
    .featured-posts {
    border-bottom: 5px solid black;
    }

    Adjust size and color as necessary.

  • Unknown's avatar

    This would help attract the reader’s attention to the different sections?

    I think it would, but maybe I’m a sucker for cute colors. :)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks for this.

    I know someone recently said in relation to my posts that CSS only works to change how the page looks, NOT the configuration of the theme itself. Nevertheless, I wanted to ask whether it is possible to insert a picture within a featured post of Twenty Eleven that would hyperlink to an external page, or even another pager within the site? Failing that, any way to add a link within the ‘featured post’ section?

    Ideally, I’m looking for a way to be directed to the main content (e.g. a download link), without having to click two/three times on the ‘featured post’ section.

    Cheers for any tips

    You can add a link pretty easily to almost every other part of the showcase template page in Twenty Eleven except the featured posts section. Would it work for you to add a link to the home page area just above the featured posts, or to the showcase sidebar widget area to the left of recent posts, or to the footer bar even?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi, sorry for not posting in a separate entry. I was really hoping to link to external pages from the ‘features post’… I.e. you read through it, then click on it, and either download a document (say), or click on a hyperlink and are taken to another page. I know that if you click on the ‘read more’ of the feature post, it takes you to another page, where you can do this… But ideally, I’d eliminate that alltogether, and have everything displayed upfront ONLY on the featured post section of the home page.

  • Unknown's avatar

    So for example, if I managed to replace the ‘continue reading’ by say ‘download’ or ‘read more’, and that would take me directly to the source (e.g. another web page, a document to download), etc, that’d be legendary.
