Twenty Four Theme – getting started with images in grid
-
I really loved the Twenty Fourteen when i saw it – its what i wanted all along but I just dont seem to understand how to put the images in a grid as seen here http://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/
I have gone to the dashboard of my site http://helgagomes.com/ and then chosen my main page and tried to add 4 images of more or less the same dimension and the just fall into a column one below the other.
I have been reading that i need to do something called Sticky but i am not sure what this is. I did chose grid in my customize menu.Any help would be great! Thanks a lot.The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

As i wait for some help, i have been trying to help myself:) I found out that if i have one gallery each for my many pages then i can chose the way the images will be displayed – eg grid, etc. Now i do have 4 images in a grid on the front page but i dont know how to link them to the other pages like the http://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/ shows. My images just get linked to a larger version of themselves.
The blog I need help with is helgagomes.com. -
I am having trouble myself.. If you didn’t know about this youtube, this might help!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyeRYZ_6I2E

Hi there,
For those posts, you’ll need to select a featured tag and make sure each of those posts is tagged with the featured tag.
Also, you’ll need to set a featured image for each of those posts. Instructions for how to set a featured image is here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/You can read more about this in the ‘Featured Content and Featured Images’ section of the theme instructions here:
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/Let me know if you have further questions!
-
The theme automatically pulls up to six different posts with featured images and the featured tag into that grid at the top. This is not something you construct manually in a single post, like a gallery.
-
Thanks a lot eureollo! i think i understand what is happening now. But my only problem is that i wanted to link those featured images to individual pages but it seems like I can only tag posts and not pages?
i was aiming more for a web page rather than a blog. So from the main page each of those photos would lead to another page – one for each ocean that we study. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -
eurello, i think i figured out that you cant tag pages – only posts. So I gave one post a featured image, as well as a tag called ‘featured’, went to Customize and set that too and now I can see my images. The question now is how to link the page ‘Arabian Sea’ to that post which features the Arabian Sea featured image. I want to give each ocean a featured image.
thanks a million! -
Posts and Pages are not the same and the Featured Post Slider is only for Featured Posts not for Pages.
-
In your Featured Post you will need to create a link to that Arabian Sea Page. This is the URL of that Page http://helgagomes.com/arabian-sea/
This is the guide for creating links in posts and pages: http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/This is the general link model:
<a href="URL HERE">Highlighted anchor text here</a>
This is the visual result – it’s not actually linked here in the forum.
Highlighted anchor text here1. Enter the anchor text you want to link to first.
2. Then use your mouse to highlight that anchor text. (If you don’t highlight the anchor text the chain icon will remain grayed out and not be useable.)
3. Next click the chain icon in the editor and proceed to create the link. -
It seems to me that you do not understand how custom menus operate so that could be an issue for you. Know that these are static pages that will never update automatically with fresh content.
Arabian Sea
The Amazon Continuum
BERING SEA(1) There is only one page we can post to in any blog.
(2) The static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ we bloggers create do not automatically update.Only the dynamic pages like Archives, Categories and Tags created by the software when we publish a post will update automatically update with new posts.
By default the front page of the blog is the Page that displays all posts in your blog. You can create a static front page and have your published posts display on another page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ but doing that does not change what follows.
Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
This guide will walk you through how to create category pages for your blog, to display groupings of similar posts on pages other than your front page. http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
Create a custom menu

Add dynamic categories and sub-categories pages to it

Create order and sub-menus (dropdowns)

There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well.

Hi Helga,
Awesome, it’s looking like you’re getting this figured out! I see you have your custom menu set up, and you have a static front page.
The featured content at the top of Twenty Fourteen can only be linked to posts, not to pages. But that can be a good way to highlight your recent posts with your static front page just below.
Timethief’s instructions of putting a link to the page in the post might also work for you.
Let me know if you have further questions about this!

thanks a million Eurello and Timethief! Yes i was confusing posts and pages but I think i got it now:) my ‘new’ problem is that even though i gave captions, Title, Alt Text etc but none of it appears. I am reading that it can only appear if I add code but i dont think i would even know how to start. once again thanks!

I still can’t get my photo come up in the grid section at the top. The post title does shows up. I don’t want to upload 6 posts in grid, 3 is fine with me, but how could i upload the photos in grid? If i click on the title, it goes to the post which shows photo…
-
Hi Fulminator, once you insert a photo in your post (the one you want to show in the grid) you have to go to the bottom rifht corner and make it your featured image. Then you need to tag it with the tag ‘featured’. then you go to the drop down menu at the top just below your photo and select Customize and you will see a menu pop on the right side. I am sure you know of it. Select Featured content – you see antoehr menu. Select Grid for layout and under tag type featured. so actually you are calling the tag that you just made for your photo. Then it will automatically pop in the grid.

How cool! I’m from Hiroshima, now living in Chicagoland area. Glad to hear that you loved it! Now that I am older, i do appreciate my homeland more.
It is a beautiful place, thanks! -
my ‘new’ problem is that even though i gave captions, Title, Alt Text etc but none of it appears.
This won’t appear for a featured image. The featured image is a setting that’s basically used by the theme to promote your posts in a fancy way (it varies by theme – sometimes a slider, sometimes in the featured content area).
If you want the caption and so forth to appear, upload the same image as a regular image in your actual post:
