Twenty Fourteen Color Questions

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m a newbie working on a new site @ justiceaid.org. I’m using Twenty Fourteen theme and have a few questions: 1) On navigation menu, how do I add a color background to the landing page (ABOUT US)? The color background appears for drop down pages (MISSION, etc) but not the main page and subsequently it’s not intuitive to click. 2) For the life of me, I cannot find where I select global color for links and rollover link colors. The Custom Design page lets me select section colors but not type/link colors. THANK YOU.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Pamela,

Please note that when you are on one of the subpages for About, that font color will turn to that light green color you selected as seen here:

As for changing certain link colors you can do that if you edit CSS. I see that you already added some CSS, but if you need more help I highly suggestion heading over to our CSS Customization forum here:

We have amazing volunteers and staff that would be more than happy to help!

    Cheers!

    Thanks Grace.

A friend helped me with that CSS code.

I put up a slider on the homepage and it does not currently click to posts. I could do that, but how would users know to click? Is there a way to indicate this in a more intuitive fashion (other than my revising my images with a “learn more” link)? What is your experience with your customers and users? Do they know to click or is there a way to add a message in gray next to the forward/back arrows? I’m curious about this.

Also, I understand that sliders aren’t great for page ranking and I’m better off adding links to the homepage below the slider. Would you agree?

I increased the width of the main area using a full page template. Do the proportions (size of type, featured images, etc) look right to you?

This is a brand new site with thin content (for now). As you can see, we are a nonprofit that promotes music concerts for great causes. We want the site to get people excited about the musical artists and to purchase lots of tickets. I’m hoping the site appears elegant and clean with a little edge.

We haven’t mounted our social media yet b/c this particular sponsor’s contract stipulates that we not get into it. Instead, we’ll direct folks to the site via emails and texts.

Any thoughts from you and the forum – content, design, SEO – much appreciated!

    Hi there!

What is your experience with your customers and users? Do they know to click or is there a way to add a message in gray next to the forward/back arrows? I’m curious about this.

To be completely honest I’ve never run into an issue with a reader not being able to figure this out. Twenty fourteen is one of our more popular themes and pretty easy to maneuver around. One reason you can tell it is a link is that when you hover over the slideshow there’s a slight change in color. So I wouldn’t focus on this. The more important thing to focus on would be content.

Also, I understand that sliders aren’t great for page ranking and I’m better off adding links to the homepage below the slider. Would you agree?

I don’t think it would that big of a difference. However I would say that the slider would look a lot more appealing in my eyes than links.

Good to know. I’m dealing with a few middle-aged folks and they didn’t think to click on the slider. I’ll add more tags as you suggest. Thanks for taking a look! I do like this template. :)
