Twenty Fourteen: Empty space on top of featured image
-
What’s with the whole empty space that appears on top of a featured image and the right sidebar when viewing a post?
It’s about 75px high if I had to guess, on desktop.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Patrick – I’m not sure what empty space you’re referring to? Do you see it in the theme demo here:

Yes. I was referring to the white space that appears above both the featured image and right sidebar while viewing a post. I have a 1280 x 720 display. Also, in mobile view, the words “Primary Menu” appear right behind the menu button (3 horizontal lines icon) in dark gray.

You guessed well: it’s 72px.
It’s reasonable blank space above the content, like there’s blank space below the content:

You get the exact same space on the main posts page too:
http://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/If you don’t like it, you can’t remove it, except if you have the Custom Design upgrade.
-
Yeah I know that upgrade keeps giving me the eye lol. I wish those two would be fixed in the theme though, seems unnecessary to anyone using the theme.
-
And the space doesn’t need any “fixing”: it wouldn’t be correct to have no space between the header and the top border of the topmost ephemera widget, or no space between the “Older posts” button and the footer, etc.
-
Well I understand padding but the padding that happens above the image and sidebar doesn’t “look” like it’s supposed to be there. I guess the WP user just doesn’t matter in this particular situation unless money is being spent. No worries, thanks anyway.
Android. LG Optimus V. Custom ROM running 2.3.7. 480 x 320 view, but also does it in other resolutions. Figures that the mobile layout would be designed with iPhone in mind.
-
Hi Patrick – I’m not able to reproduce the bug in the most recent version of Android. 2.3.7 is an older version, are you able to upgrade? I think the Primary Menu text might be there for browsers that can’t load the icon, and it sounds like in that version of Android, it’s loading both.
As to the padding, another option would be to try out some other themes that have a less apparent gap between the content and the header:
http://theme.wordpress.com/There are a number of different free themes with a magazine-style layout; you might prefer one of them. Here are a couple of suggestions:

Thanks anyway. I see why you’re a happiness engineer. You really really try to understand and help. It’s okay though if it doesn’t show up to a wide variety of people then I’ll just deal with it being there.
