Twenty Fourteen Full Width Page

I am in the process of creating a website using twenty fourteen. I am really happy with the basics of it, but before I continue with the editing, I am trying to change some of the pages to a full width page. I have changed the template for the Home Page and Artisan Cakes from default to full width page, but I can’t seem to be able to increase the width of any of the columns, or the overall width, so that I can end up using the full width including where the right sidebar would be. I have only the free version at the moment, until I can work out if this is going to suit me, so I can’t add any CSS or plugins. But looking at the demo site, it does seem that this theme allows full width, I just can’t seem to make it work. I would appreciate any help.

    Many thanks, Joanne.

  • Hi there,

The way the Twenty Fourteen theme is designed, the “full” width page template is one that still contains a fairly narrow content (text) column with whitespace to either side. You can see that in the demo here: https://twentyfourteendemo.wordpress.com/default-page-templates/full-width-page-template/

This is by design, and there is not a setting you can access to change this. It would be possible to use CSS, but to do that you will first need to upgrade to the WordPress.com Pro Plan before we could assist. It is not possible to modify CSS on our free sites.

Twenty Fourteen has launched some time ago before we had a “block editor” for page layout creation, so another option is to switch to one of our more modern themes shown here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-site-editing/

Unlike our older legacy themes, these newer ones are designed to work with our block editor, which has full-width options built-in by default. https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-site-editing/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I see on the demo page for the full width template that although the text is constrained to the central column, the images down the page float out into the white space either side. Can you please tell me how to achieve this – that may provide a solution for me. Many thanks.

  • Hi again,

I see on the demo page for the full-width template that although the text is constrained to the central column, the images down the page float out into the white space on either side. Can you please tell me how to achieve this

Correct, that behavior is hard-coded into the theme. When you set an image alignment (left or right), it causes the image to break out from the column, but this is only for photos. There is no setting to expand the entire column, so everything within (text and images) fills the page.

To customize that behavior would require CSS, as mentioned above. Let us know if you need further assistance or if you have any questions.

Thank you so much, that has explained it and has given me a work around.

I’m putting this question here because it’s related to the 2014 theme which I’ve been using since 2014! and hoping for a quick answer.

As ‘2014’ is 8 years old, are there any issues with security or is the theme still perfectly safe to use?

  • We take security very seriously here https://wordpress.com/support/security/ and all available themes are safe to use. :)
