'Twenty Fourteen' theme changing menu color
-
Hello, everyone.
Just a quick question regarding changing the color of something. First off, I have a basic account; I don’t pay for any particular plan.
For the Twenty Fourteen theme, the primary menu highlights in green whenever I hover over it. Does anyone know where I can change that color? I have a purple background, and I’m not too gung ho about the green-on-purple look, haha.
Thanks, everyone, for your help and responses!

Hi! I checked out your site, osjsoccer.wordpress.com, and see the primary menu turns orange now when you hover, so maybe you’re all set?
Let me know if you still need help with it or if there’s a green problem still happening elsewhere. :)

Hey, Sarah!
Thanks for taking the time to respond to me!
Well, actually, yes, I was able to change it, but only to one of the preset palettes. Ideally, we’d like to be able to choose a specific color with one of those #xxxxx codes. Is there a way to do that?
ALSO, while you’re here, if you’re able to answer this, I have a question about mapping a domain: we currently have a domain that we’d like to map to this WordPress site. In the “Domain” tabs, when I click map a domain for $13/month, does that mean it will just give my WordPress site the domain we already own? And all of my content on the WordPress site will stay unchanged?
Thanks again for your response, Sarah! I really appreciate it.

You’re welcome! I’m glad you got it changed! :)
To change it to a specific color code, you would need the Premium upgrade to access Custom Design. (It’s in Customize, where you can try it out before buying, if you’d like.)
For your domain mapping: Yes, if you own a domain elsewhere, you would choose the $13 mapping subscription here, then change your name servers to point to WordPress.com to connect it.
Mapping your domain to your site won’t change your content, so no worries there. (It will only change the way readers find your site, because they will be able to go to your domain and find your WordPress.com site, instead of using only the free WordPress.com address.)
There is a page with domain mapping details here to help you work through the steps for getting it setup: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Also, the Premium upgrade I mentioned above includes mapping (so you wouldn’t need to spend an additional $13 on the mapping if you decide to add Premium for more customization options). You can check out the plan comparison and pricing here if you’re interested: https://wordpress.com/plans/compare
Let me know if I can help you with anything else!

Sarah, thanks so much for all of the advice there! I really appreciate it. This actually helps us out A LOT!
One last thing regarding the page: if you can see the slider where you can change click left and right between stories on there, do you know a way I can change the color of the box with the headlines in it? Let me know if that doesn’t make sense and I’ll try to re-explain it!
I got the colors on the sides and everything to change, so that’s awesome. :) Thanks again!

Happy to help! :)
For the text color on the slider, do you mean the titles on the posts in the slider, like the one that says “COPA AMERICA 2016 GROUP STAGE IS SET” and so on?
If you have an upgrade that allows Custom Design, you can target the color on those specifically with custom CSS, like this:
.entry-title a { color: red; }(Where it says “red” you can change to another color or color code to fit your needs.)
If you add the Premium upgrade, you would find the area to do this in Customize > CSS. You can try it out without upgrading under Customize > Custom Design to see if that does what you’re wanting before considering the upgrade.

That’s not what I was talking about exactly, actually, but that is also VERY useful, and we’ll be sure to look into that too, haha. Thanks for that!
What I was talking about specifically, actually, was the box AROUND the headline. Not the big one with the featured image, rather, the one little outlined box around the headline, like “COPA AMERICA 2016 GROUP STAGE IS SET.”
-
Haha. Well, the title one is one for your collection! ;)
For the box around the title within the slider, in Customize > CSS (with the upgrade), you could add this:
.slider-viewport .entry-header { background-color: red; }There are also some nice background color properties beyond using colors (like transparent, and inherit) to check out here, if you’re interested: http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_background-color.asp

That’s awesome!
Thanks so much, Sarah. I really appreciate all of your help! Last, last thing, PROMISE! lol
If you can see at the top menu, we have a bunch of different menu options for different things we cover. If you click inside them, you’ll see that it aggregates all of our posts that are categorized into a specific “Category.”
At the top of each of those pages, it says “Category Archives: Orlando City SC” for example. Is there a way we can get rid of the “Category Archives” part? Same goes for “Tag.”
No rush, just whenever you’re available again!

You’re welcome!
Hiding the archive titles is another custom CSS thing that will require an upgrade to save on your site. If you decide to do that, you’d go to Customize > CSS again and insert the following:
.archive-header { display: none; }(You could also try using .archive-title instead of .archive-header, if you’d like.)
Let me know if you have any questions. :)
If you decide to add the Premium upgrade and need more CSS help, we’ve got a CSS Customization forum right here if needed: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

Sarah, seriously thanks for all your help! I couldn’t have done all of this without your help, and now I’m leaving with more than I was originally wanting to know. Thanks so much for everything, Sarah!
