Have your read the theme description page here?
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/
The primary sidebar (left) width is 162.
The secondary “content” sidebar (right) width is 306.
Widgets in the footer widget area are 255 wide.You cannot increase the width of any sidebar on any theme without purchasing a custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing. See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable custom and CSS editing:

Nerts! This thread is in the CSS Forum and I did not notice that when I posted above. I apologize. I don’t help with CSS editing. Either another Volunteer or Staff will assist you when they can. Again .. I’m sorry.

I removed the widget because we need the site ready for viewing now. Besides, it’s not the widget that I have an issue with its the theme. I need to know how to make the side bar larger in order to give the widget the right amount of space on the page.
Thanks anyways @timethief.

Hi there, let’s start with the following. Add the same amount to the margin-left and width declarations in the following rules.
.site-content, .site-main .widecolumn { margin-left: 222px; } #secondary { width: 162px; }
