Twenty Seventeen

Okay. I’m going to come off as a complete idiot.
It’s been a long time since I’ve attempted to use WordPress. so I’m clearly out of touch on certain things. So please bare with me.

    My website url is sespiderproductions.com
It is currently a simple HTML landing page. I would like to once again use WordPress. My last WordPress site was downloaded and saved. However, each time I attempt to upload, it fails to install. Thus, it is basically lost forever, and the theme no longer exist.

Which has lead to me using the free Twenty Seventeen theme for the new account. But I must be missing something very important. And knowing my luck, it’s probably a very simple fix. Here’s the issue.

I expect the theme to look like the demo. But instead, it looks only shows the header and my WordPress blog entries. I don’t want this. I never use the blog portion of WordPress because I tend to post to facebook, Gab, Minds, etc instead. For the moment, I simply want my WordPress page to be a one page site. Press the “About” menu and it moves the page to that section. Same for contact, affiliates, etc.
My WordPress is currently showing this:
    https://sespider.wordpress.com/
But as you can see, it is not showing the theme at all. Minus the color scheme and minimum of the static header image, which is suppose to be a youtube video, and clearly isn’t.
It should look something like the demo here: https://twentyseventeendemo.wordpress.com/

I’m positive I’m missing something obvious.
But for the life of me, I can not figure it out.
That or I’m just over worked

If I can get this theme working the way I need it, then chances are that I’ll purchase the theme. As I hate using YouTube as a video resource.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • You need to set your front page as a static front page instead of having it display your latest posts. Create a page called Home. Then, go into your Customizer‘s Static Front Page panel and select the page you just created as your Front Page.

That’ll get you started. After that, follow the guide to setting up Twenty Seventeen here:

    https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyseventeen

Just let us know if you get stuck at any point.

If I can get this theme working the way I need it, then chances are that I’ll purchase the theme.

No need to purchase the theme – it’s free!

I’ve been having issues setting up the one-column layout. In the setup guide it says to click ‘theme options’ in the customizer, but I am unable to find this option. Can anyone help me please>

  • katemareebrown – you need to set a static homepage before that option appears. Please see my note to the original poster above.

Thank you for the quick reply, Kathrynwp.
    Much appreciated.

Outside of needing to update the images, I seem to have everything working now. But I do have some additional questions.
    1) How do I reduce the size of the Instagram widget?
As I already have it set to 1 column and 1 row. But it still seems too large for Desktop use.
    2) How do I get the wordpress link to automatically go to the desktop view, when viewed on mobile?

Ah, you need to turn off the mobile theme. Head here and choose “No” next to “Enable mobile theme”:

I think that space would look better with a 2 x 2 grid – would you like to give it a try? Actually resizing a single Instagram image there would require Custom CSS, which is available with the Premium or Business plans.

Hi, I am new at WordPress. I choose Twenty Seventeen cause it allows me to put a video in the header. But when I put the url of Youtube, it shows the video but not in all the space available of the header.

You can check it on lahoramagica1.wordpress.com

Is there a way to put the video of youtube 16:9 format in full space of the header? Don´t mind if it is cropped a little bit.

    Thanks in advance!

  • eventoslahoramagica – looks like your video is in a very wide-screen format; it has black bars on the top and bottom even when viewing it directly on YouTube’s site. There isn’t a way to adjust that in the theme.

If you need further help, could you please start a separate thread? Thanks!
