Twenty Ten drop-down menus difficult to use on Samsung Galaxy Tab with Android
-
Hi WordPress.com support
I am about to launch a new website, kewbirmingham.co.uk, and in preparation I asked several acquaintances if they would test out the site which uses theme Twenty Ten on wordpress.com.
A friend who works in IT technology reports the following:
“….on my Android Tablet (Samsung Galaxy Tab), I have to say that the drop down menu was not so much a success as it only drops after several attempts.”
His operating system is gingerbread 2.3.3.
I have not observed the problem myself as he lives some distance from me.
Please advise me on this – is there a reason or a fix for this problem.
I have been through the forums and have only found the problem at http://wordpress.org/support/topic/wp-dropdown-menu-not-android-friendly
which is currently not resolved.
Many thanks in anticipation of your advice.
Very Best Wishes

Howdy,
You might ask him to contact us directly so that we can troubleshoot this issue.
Thanks!

I’ll ask him but this seems an unusual approach in solving the problem. Surely, visitors to a website would not be inclined themselves to try to solve a problem in navigating the site by contacting the software developer. There could be many such visitors experiencing the problem. The link to the forum that I gave you in my initial support request suggests that there is a problem which is not specific visitor dependent.
Am I wrong in this? If so why? -
We’ll need more specifics on his tablet and how it’s interacting.
More than likely, this may be an issue with how the tablet is handling hover elements, as you can’t hover on a touch interface like you would with a mouse.

As my friend cannot add to this forum, only me, you will have to ask me what specifics you need and I will pass them on to him.
Please can we now be constructive about solving this as it must be a common problem – twenty ten is uour default theme and hence greratly well used and Samsung tablets are now very popular and the nuimber of other tablet users running android is rapidly increasing. -
If your friend is referring to parent pages and child pages in the menu, those won’t appear since we disable drop downs with the mobile theme.
As staff-blorbo explained, mobile browsers won’t be able to hover to expand the menu if the top level menu item is a page.
To work around this in both instances (if you need sub-menus), my best suggestion is to disable the Mobile theme in each blog dashboard under Appearance -> Mobile Options by selecting “No” for “Enable mobile theme”.
Then, add a static top-level tab in their custom menu, which should allow sub-pages in the menu to appear.
I tested this on my HTC Droid Incredible with Dolphin Browser HD on a test blog with both Twenty Ten and Titan themes, with a static top-level tab and the pages below it.
I hope that helps! :)

That did the trick! Now the drop down menus work properly.
Many thanks to bryanvillarin for solving this,
