Twenty Ten Post URLs
-
Hi
Not sure if this is the right forum for this but will try.
Is it possible to prevent Post URLs from including the date eg
http://sufinz.com/2016/01/06/devi-tide-kapiti-workshop/
The reason I ask is because I need to control the order of the POST placement eg
http://sufinz.com/news-events/
so that certain (multiple) posts stay on top. So far the way I have been doing this is by changing post dates – which is extremely tiresome but does work.
What I just noticed is that Google tends to hang on to the old URL and so returns broken links – which doesn’t help either searchers or most probably the Google ranking.
Any advice or suggestion welcome.
Thanks
Andrew

No, you cannot remove the datestamps from any post URLs on sites hosted by wordpress.COM.

By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.
However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. To do that create two pages first http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

That is based on an assumption that the developer of the site knows a great deal more about than anyone else so it is a shame that WordPress.com forces this restriction. Many wordpress.com sites are not blog sites, as is the case with the one I am working on – and we have varied needs which would be nice to be recognized and respected. It is not asking a lot to have the post list have more than one method for ordering and more than one method for setting the URL especially when there is no sticky post option.
Thanks however for taking the time to tell me that it is not possible to change this. I have already used static pages for my front page. I very much appreciate the superb level of support we get in these forums.

I am not convinced that you understand how custom menus with dynamic category page links in them work. Please review what’s below.
This is a one or the other situation. You have two choices on any blog
(1) All posts on the front page.
(2) Or a static front page http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/ and all posts on a different page.By default the front page of a blog displays all published posts in reverse chronological order with the most recently published post on top. When we publish a post on WordPress software the software automatically creates the same entry in the Archives, and on the dynamic (automatically updating) Categories and Tags pages in accord with the Categories and Tags we assign to that post.
When we create custom menu and add the dynamic (automatically updating) category pages to that custom menu we create the appearance (not the reality) of posting to more than one page.
You need to be aware that:
1. There are differences between posts and pages described here
https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/2. There are differences between static pages we bloggers create https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ that will not automatically update, and dynamic category pages created by the software when you publish a post which will automatically update https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/.
3. We organize posts by category assignment prior to publication. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/ and when we publish posts the dynamic category pages they automatically display on are determined by the categories we assign to them.
So the process you need to use is:
a. Assign Categories to your Posts. https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories
b. Create a custom menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#1-create-a-custom-menu
c. Add the dynamic category page links into the custom menu that you want to appear in that menu https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-category-pages and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menus
d. Create pages and sub-pages for static content, not for posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
e. Add any custom links and other items like static pages and sub-pages into your custom menu
https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-custom-links https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#adding-pages
and arrange them as you wish them to appear https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menusPlease see https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

There may be something there I have not yet understood but with a quick read it seems to me all the elements described are already in use on my website.
This is my static front page: http://sufinz.com/
This is my posts list page http://sufinz.com/news-events/
On the right of that page you will see the category list and all posts are allocated categories eg Events in Wellington: http://sufinz.com/category/events-wellington-lower-ni/
My pages already have numerous sub-pages and some sub-sub-pages.
What I need / want to do is to be able to list multiple events, which come in at random times, in an order that is determined by me, not by date, and with an URL that is fixed even if the post date changes – because some events are very important to our visitors, especially first time visitors, while some are not. And return visitors can easily find what they want using the category filters but first time visitors may well not know how to do that or which categories to choose.
If I have missed some method which could be used to do that it would be great – and I very much appreciate being told – but looking at that list there is nothing there as far as I can tell that I have not already used.
Thank you for your patience.

Hi @andrewhallnz,
in an order that is determined by me, not by date, and with an URL that is fixed even if the post date changes
You could use child pages. They are not date dependent, and they can be put in the order you’d like. Several themes have some elegant ways of displaying child pages too (I left a few examples in those links).
A few caveats:
– Twenty Ten doesn’t have a built in template for child pages. You would need to use a shortcode and do some styling, but we could help with that.
– Pages don’t publish out like news (because they are not date dependent like news is.) So if you want announcements to go out to subscribers, you would want to write blog posts about them too.
Given that, would you like to give it a try?
https://en.support.wordpress.com/list-pages-shortcode/If you decide to try a different theme, be sure to check out its full demo to see if it will fit your site. You can find setup instructions on the theme info pages, and we can help with that too.

Thanks for that suggestion, much appreciated. I have found a very similar solution using display-posts-shortcode plus some CSS
My sample page for that is here: https://sufiordernz.wordpress.com/test-category/
It allows me to easily sort posts by any category order I wish – which means the date embodied URL does not matter because I never need to change it.
Of course, as I just recently discovered, we can use sticky posts for a more basic version of the same.
Cheers

Perfect, @andrewhallnz, yeah, the shortcodes work too so long as they’re styled. I’m glad you’ve sorted that out. Cheers!
