Twenty Ten Problems

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am thinking about using the Twenty Ten theme but here’s my problem:
    I want to use a photo that has the name of our blog on it so there’s no need for the name of the organization to also be above the photo. But I can’t figure out how to replace that now superfluous heading. I’ve looked under editor/header, but can’t find it. Can anyone help?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Right way to do it: Hide the title and tagline with the CSS upgrade.

    Very much less desirable alternative: Go to settings > general and delete the title and tagline. This is a bad idea since the search engines cannot read your title in the image, so they will not see a title for the blog and that will affect your search engine ranking.

    You can take a look at this post by Panos which tells which theme here have the option of hiding the title text.

    I have found the headspace2 plugin solves the seo issue resulting from erasing title in settings-general.

    @qistwo
    Please do not post comments that pertain only to wordpress.ORG installs here in the wordpress.Com forum. It causes confusion as we have not FTP access to free hosted wordpress.COM blogs and cannot upload individual plugins into them. Please read this entry so your are crystal clear of the differences.

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    My apologies, I was not aware of that. Thanks for the info!

    You are welcome and thank you for agreeing not to confuse bloggers here at wordpress.com.

    I am in agreement with davisteacherstoday. I have the same issue. The “Hide Text” option should be available for ALL themes that feature a custom header… especially the default theme. This seems like it would be a simple programming fix on the part of WordPress.

    Can we please get this fix implemented? Thanks!

    It requires hacking of 100 + themes and then testing of those 100 + themes to make sure it works on each of them.

    Seems to me, since Twenty-Ten is the default theme, it should be one of the ones that allows you to turn off the title. I also don’t like the fact that, if I’m forced to have a title, I’m not allowed to control the style of the title, thereby forcing me to purchase an upgrade.

    You can change the title style using typekit fonts.

    Does a couple of spaces work as a “blank” title?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Don’t do a blank title. If your site does not have a title, the search engines will not like that and your search engine ranking will suffer.

    Damn – they get you every which way! :) That’s the database side of me coming out!

    Yeah, the only way to get rid of the title and tagline in 2010 is with the CSS upgrade. The following is all you need to put into the CSS edit window.

    #site-title, #site-description {
    display: none;
    }

    If you want to try it, just go to appearance > edit CSS, delete all the informational stuff from the text area, paste the above in and press the preview button. You sometimes have to force refresh the preview page to get the change to show up though.

    @TSP – OK – your post that “If your site does not have a title, the search engines will not like that and your search engine ranking will suffer” rasies a question. Traction Theme does not have a title – it has a byline, but no title. We have to put text into an image file at upload it as a logo file – so does this mean that Google is going to treat Traction users less nicely, OR is it that the Title in the settings still gets picked up by Google, even though it doesn’t display on the Front page?

    I’m thinking the latter must be the case, as the title still appends to post titles when shared on Facebook.

    @teamoyeniyi
    Now that’s a question for you to pose to the Traction theme designer in the Premium Themes Forum :)

    If you notice, at the top of your browser window, or on a tab, it shows the title of your blog, so the search engines will see it. I don’t know how they handled that, but they did, so no worries.

    <blockquote. OR is it that the Title in the settings still gets picked up by Google, even though it doesn’t display on the Front page?

    > Settings > General > Title is what the search spiders index.

    Actually, they’ve handled it with a “title” tag in the head section of the XHTML, so again, no worries.
