making the twenty ten theme to show excerpts on the home page: add || is_home() in loop.php file like this:
<?php if ( is_archive() || is_search() || is_home) : // Only display excerpts for archives and search. ?>
/*added is_home above */
<div class=”entry-summary”>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
</div><!– .entry-summary –>you should be seeing only excerpts in the home page now.
note this is for the 3.0.1 themes -
@mediclawren, that won’t work here. We have no access to the underlying wordpress or theme files at wordpress.com.
You need to familiarize yourself with the differences as this answer will just confuse things here.

Is there a way to add a border or change the background color of a sidebar in 2010 without editing CSS?

You can create colors in widgets but you cannot change the color of the sidebar area without editing the CSS.

Somehow I’ve lost the ability to choose “one column no sidebar” or “default template” in the attributes section of the page editor. Also, the editor won’t display two columns even if I select number of columns = 2 in screen options. What have I done?

I love Twenty Ten with the only exception being that I have yet to find an easy straight forward way of columnizing its layout in a magazine style. Is there such a way to give it this look and feel of a magazine?

Twenty Ten is not a magazine style theme. We cannot edit templates and themes on wordpress.com free hosted blogs. The only way to add columns to any theme here is to purchase an annually renewable CSS editing upgrade and do the work yourself. You can use the preview dunction and try before you buy . Appearance > Edit CSS
