Twenty Ten Theme

Matt Thomas mentioned in his WordPress.com blog post introducing 2010 that these two categories (Asides and Gallery) create a different type of post on the front page of your blog. Here’s what he said,

Twenty Ten includes special styles for posts that you file in the “Asides” or “Gallery” categories. When viewed on an index page (like your home page or a list of posts from a particular month), asides get a simplified look that seamlessly fit between full-length posts, while galleries give a peek at the photos that lie within. If you don’t already have those categories on your blog, just add them and start assigning posts to them. Twenty Ten will recognize the category name and start applying the correct styles automatically.

Here’s the Support Doc on Post Categories:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-categories/

I find that entire post an excellent introduction to the inner workings of the theme and can only have wished that the Theme Team had done the same for the likes of Inuit Types.

    @Jennifer
I was scratching my head trying to find theme options that didn’t exist. Now nhs1963 has her answer. She needs to create two categories; one for “Asides” and one for “Gallery”. Thanks so much for supplying that information and the links. :)

For “Twenty Ten” is it possible to remove the padding in the content/post area so that it’s flush with the left edge of the header?

And can you also reduce the padding between the page and sidebar, or increase the page size so that it’s closer to the sidebar?

Also, can the single column layout be customized to fit the entire page and not be centered?

@eriewire: Yes, yes, and yes – if you have experience in CSS editing and if you buy the CSS upgrade.

    Hi

i have questions regarding the “Gallery” Aspect of Twenty ten.

Are the images you upload considered “photos”? I tried using the Gallery category for some of my photos that has several images but the post is noted as 0 Photos as seen on my blog – http://nutsaboutmakeup.wordpress.com/

how do you create the picture at the side of the post as shown on this blog link http://2010dev.wordpress.com/ , else well as the thumbnails?

    thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok I am confused here. Are the “Asides” and “Galleries” only for wordpress.org or does the WordPress.com theme have them as well?

Also what exactly is the purpose of the “galleries” and “asides”? I mean what do they actually do for your blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

Oops forgot to ask this as well. Is there a way to make the text smaller in Twenty Ten for paragraphs?

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t answer your first two questions. I can answer the last one though. We have three options for changing dont sizes, font families and colors.

Changing font style on posts or pages either post by post or page by page
We wordpress.com users can change font styles and colors on our posts and pages, a post and a page at a time. http://en.support.wordpress.com/editors/font-size-color/

Changing font style and color throughout the whole blog

    (1) We can use TypeKit Fonts > Appearance > TypeKit Fonts

    (2) We cannot access the templates in our wordpress.com blogs and edit the underlying php and html. However, if we choose to pay for a CSS upgrade and undertake CSS editing then we can change font styles and colors throughout the entire blog.

    Thanks for the response!

Is their an active wordpress support forum which can allow us to begin making the CSS changes (mentioned above) to the Twenty Theme? If so, will you put up the link?

And can the black rim around the Header and page font/weight be changed to a different color? (That would be awesome :))

    @eriewire
There are no forums for individual themes here at wordpress.com. Almost all themes here are originally coded to run on wordpress.ORG installs. They are adapted so the can run on this WPMU (wordpress multi-user) platform.

We do have a CSS forum for those who are adept at CSS, and who have purchased the CSS upgrade. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization

If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS.

    Thanks timethief!

If we make the CSS purchase will it be possible to change the black rim around the header image and navigation font/weight in the Twenty Ten theme? We’re looking to change the black rim header color on each page, and change the navigation link color for each page when someone hovers over it… similar to what http://www.guardian.co.uk/ uses.

Ok, so even if you sign up for the “free” typekit account you can’t use it here unless you are willing to buy the CSS upgrade? I am begining to wonder if this is such a good place to be after all…no offense but the more I dig and ask questions the more “restrictions” I seem to be finding.

  • Unknown's avatar

@tfockler60 The CSS upgrade is not required for typekit to work on your blog here is a tutorial for using typekit on your WP.com blog » http://getook.wordpress.com/2010/01/04/typekit-guide-change-your-fonts/

I’d like to be able to upload a whole folder of photos either from my computer or from my facebook albums, rather than loading them one by one. Does anyone know how to do this? I am using twenty ten and wordpress.com. thanks Liz

  • Unknown's avatar

@blarneycrone You won’t be able to upload the folder it’s self with the pictures but you can upload all the pictures from the folder by clicking on “Add New” under the media section on your left navigation bar in your dashboard then select upload from computer then click on the folder and open it then hold down the left mouse button then drag your mouse over the pictures you want then once there highlighted then click on open and the multiple pictures will upload into your blogs media library.

t3ck…tried that several times and just can’t get typekit to work for me but thanks for the info. Maybe I will try again sometime in the near future.

Now I do have another question about this theme that I have not been able to find a solution for….In reading some of the information I found an interesting idea that I would like to use but can’t figure out how to do it with this theme. I would like to be able to have my front page show “teasers” or “excerpts” of the articles instead of the full text when a visitor visits. I would link you to where I saw this but can’t find it again. What it said however was that I can go to Setting>Reading and select the option to show just “teasers”, but upon doing so could not find where to do this. I DO have my setting set to “show summary” but that is not it.

So my question is this…how do I set this theme to show only “excerpts” or “teasers” on the home page?

Ultimatly I would like my blog to have the same kind of look as the example found here http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2010/04/26/new-theme-twenty-ten/ under asides and galleries..Check out Matt’s Blog but I have not been able to figure out how to do any of this.

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to be able to have my front page show “teasers” or “excerpts” of the articles instead of the full text when a visitor visits.

We can split content using “the more tag” in any theme and accomplish what you want. See here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

It’s important that you do not insert the more tag into the text that’s within blockquotes. Aside from that do be aware that if you have inserted the more tag and you switch to the HTML editor and see this or whatever custom text you gave supplied <!–more–> the split will not be displayed when you preview the post, but it will be there when you publish.

  • Unknown's avatar

So my question is this…how do I set this theme to show only “excerpts” or “teasers” on the home page?

I forgot to state this clear above. As we cannot access, let alone, edit the shared templates underlying our themes we cannot insert code that makes every post automatically display only teaser on the front page of our blogs. The Inuit Types template is coded to do this but the other themes are not. So we simply click the icon that looks like a broken page icon for “the more tag” and enter it into the text of each post where we want the split to occur, prior to publication.

  • Unknown's avatar

Setting>Reading and select the option to show just “teasers”, but upon doing so could not find where to do this. I DO have my setting set to “show summary” but that is not it.

On the Reading page we can set the RSS feeds to display either full text or summary in the RSS feeds that our subscribers receive.
This is what it says on that page:
For each article in a feed, show
For each article in a feed, show
    __Full text
    __Summary

So there you go. All your issues do have solutions. Isn’t that good news? :)

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok…I follow what your saying but now let me ask this. In the Twenty Ten theme when you are typing a post at the bottom of the page you will find a place called “excerpts” that has the instructions to just copy and paste a portion of your post in and leads you to believe that this will accomplish exactly what I am looking to do so here is my next question…

(I changed the font in the HTML to comic sans from the default type just to test it out)

I followed the instructions, copied and pasted part of the post and updated. Nothing. Could it be the font type I am using? I remember reading in the blog about this new theme that this was supposed to be an easy thing to do but I am having a terrible time here…LOL.

Take a look at my blog and you may get a better understanding of what I am trying to do. http://www.tfockler60.wordpress.com

Oh and sorry to be such a pest…
