Twenty Ten Theme

    Time…I DO have it set to “summary” but thats not doing it either.

    @tflockler60
    Hello again,
    There are three issues here.

    1. summaries in RSS feeds
    Good news! This is your RSS feed http://tfockler60.wordpress.com/feed/ and it is set to “summary” and the good news is that it’s working properly. :)
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/twenty-ten-theme/page/2?replies=61#post-457567

    2. splitting content using the more tag to create teasers of posts displaying on the front page

    Setting up “summary” RSS feeds does not result in the splitting of content in your posts on the front page of your blog. You must insert “the more tag” into each post as I explained on the other page to accomplish that.
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/twenty-ten-theme/page/2?replies=61#post-457564

    3. inserting excerpts into the box supplied below the editor

    In the Twenty Ten theme when you are typing a post at the bottom of the page you will find a place called “excerpts” that has the instructions to just copy and paste a portion of your post in and leads you to believe that this will accomplish exactly what I am looking to do so here is my next question…

    (I changed the font in the HTML to comic sans from the default type just to test it out)

    I followed the instructions, copied and pasted part of the post and updated. Nothing. Could it be the font type I am using? I remember reading in the blog about this new theme that this was supposed to be an easy thing to do but I am having a terrible time here…LOL.

    No it’s not the font or anything you did. I just tried inserting an excerpt into that excerpt box In the Twenty Ten and discovered the “excerpt” function is dead in that theme .

    Unfortunately, in the majority of available themes this function is dead. It only works in 8 themes on the main posts page, in 28 themes on category or monthly archive pages: … http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/category/excerpt/

    ~~timethief:

    Oh no!

    The excerpt function works in category and archive pages but not on the front/blog/home page.

    I don’t know if there is an issue with typekit. Could be. I haven’t played with that.

    Note that for the excerpt function to work, you must paste the html code into the excerpt module. Images and links work, but no shortcodes.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Also, the excerpts do not have to be just a part of the post.
    You can write whatever you like with colored background, borders, images, and whatever text you want for a blurb.

    The custom excerpts show in the email subscriptions, but not in RSS feed.

    Does anyone know of a way to change the order of the drop down menu tabs on the header? I did it a round about way of adding and deleting pages but there must be something simpler. Obviously, I am new to blogging!

    @lorla2

    According to the support pages:

    Order

    Pages are usually ordered alphabetically, but you can change the order pages are displayed in by using the order field.

    Let’s say you have three pages: Animals, Machines, WordPress

    If you wanted WordPress to appear first, you need to do the following:

    Click Pages > Edit on the menu.

    Find the page WordPress and click the title.

    Find the Attributes module.

    Put the number 1 in the text field for Order. This tells WordPress to make this the first page in the list.

    Click the Update Page button.

    Repeat the process for your other pages, but use higher numbers for the Order field: 2, 3, etc. This tells WordPress to make these the second and third items in the list.

    Or you can read the whole support article for yourself:

    Page Attributes

    thanks Mike, actually it’s not the pages, it’s the order of the drop down menus on the header that I wanted to change.

  • Unknown's avatar

    You can change the order of the pages by using numbers or letters in the box titled “order” in the right column of the ‘edit page’ area.

  • Unknown's avatar

    eriewire, thanks, maybe I wasn’t clear. There are drop down menu tabs on the bottom of the header picture. They are not in the same order as the pages and I’d like to reorder the menu tabs. I’ve got the pages in the order I like already.

  • Unknown's avatar

    In attributes there’s the first option for ‘parent’. You can reorder the menu tabs by changing their parent page. I think this is what you’re referring to :)

    @lorla2

    Can you put a link to your blog up (or link it to your user name – it tells you how in one of the stickies at the top of the forum: 8 things to know…), if you change the page order the order of the tabs should change as well, it does on my test blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @lorla2

    Assuming that this is your blog:

    http://lorla2.wordpress.com/

    I think you will need to do what I said in the instructions above to alter the page order and then set the ‘pages’ widget to display the page order view as well, otherwise you will get a discrepancy in the page order that the drop down menu and the pages widget display.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @lorla2

    To clarify (I hope) you can set the order one of three ways

    alphabetically
    by page order
    by page ID

    at the moment I suspect your drop down menus are displaying one method while your pages widget is using another method. Hence the discrepancy.

  • Unknown's avatar

    thanks Mike. I have my pages set alphabetically (which I believe is the default). Except for the home tab (on the header drop down tabs) all of the tabs are also alpha. I really don’t know what I did to get the tabs in that order but I know when I added new pages the tabs went to the left of the home tab. Is it because I followed the wordpress tips for page tabs as extra links?

    @timethief
    Yes, worked like a charm!

  • Unknown's avatar

    @lorla2

    I’m not sure to be honest. I can only suggest you try setting the page order numbers for ‘Class Information’ as:

    6th grade – 1
    Math 7 – 2
    Math Support – 3
    Pre-Algebra – 4

    and see if that makes the header menus display the same as the pages widget. If that doesn’t get them to display the same you may need to wait for someone more intelligent than me to come along – shouldn’t be along wait.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @mikecraggs

    thanks! I think I’m set, whatever roundabout way I used to set the drop down menus worked. I have all the pages I am going to use. I just wanted to learn the right way!

    Hi

    I posted this previously but didnt get a reply…

    Hi

    i have questions regarding the “Gallery” Aspect of Twenty ten.

    Are the images you upload considered “photos”? I tried using the Gallery category for some of my photos that has several images but the post is noted as 0 Photos as seen on my blog – http://nutsaboutmakeup.wordpress.com/

    how do you create the picture at the side of the post as shown on this blog link http://2010dev.wordpress.com/ , else well as the thumbnails?

    thanks

  • Unknown's avatar

    Is this the post you are talking about that doesn’t show “correctly” on the front page of your blog? http://nutsaboutmakeup.wordpress.com/2010/04/08/chanel-rouge-coco-looks/

    It’s because although you’ve used the Gallery tag for it, you haven’t actually used the WordPress “Gallery” feature to display the images in your Post.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/ or a more detailed, if somewhat longer FAQ here http://gammagirl.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/not-the-official-wordpresscom-gallery-faq/

    The featured thumbnail will be automatically be created from the first photo in your Gallery. If you need to see an example, here’s the Gallery category from my blog http://justjennifer.wordpress.com/category/gallery/
