Twenty Thirteen: line break in post titles

    I love this theme, but the post headlines are doing something weird.

    For example, the post linked below is called “Start with what you’ve got”.

    http://blamelewis.com/2011/08/22/increasing-faith/

    There’s enough room on the first line of the title to fit the word “you’ve” (I know because I’ve tried it without the word “got”), but for some reason, it’s creating a line break and shifting “you’ve got” down to the second line.

    Any idea why, or how to fix this?

    It would look a lot better if, for long titles like this, it used the whole length of the line.

    Also, when viewed on an iPad, it is breaking up the headlines (with hyphens) in an ugly way.

    The space before the last word of a title is automatically converted into a non-breaking space, to prevent “orphans” (a single word as the last line of a paragraph). This happens no matter what the theme. The only way to override it is paste this right before the last word (minus the spaces):
    & # 8 2 0 1;
    That’s the HTML entity for a thin space: it will allow a line break between the last two words.

    Thanks, justpi! I wondered if it might be something like that.

    It’s good to know there’s a workaround if I want it.

  • Chris, we’re aware of the hyphenation issue and are working on a fix. Will keep you posted.

  • Hyphenation should be fixed now—only kicking in on body content (the main post or page content area) and not in titles.

    Just checked it. Looks good now, thanks, Lance!

    @lance, could you please check the headline on this post?

    This is the only post where the headline does not look right.

    @IM: See my previous reply.

  • @ismailimail That’s working as intended (avoiding typographical widows).

    On a personal note: Twenty Thirteen works best without a sidebar—just as a suggestion. :)

    Okay I see the difference. It seems that the headlines are adjusting based on the screen size. It looks really well on a narrow width screen compared to a wide screen size. On my 1280×1024 monitor, there are only two words on the second line of the headline, leaving a wide space between the second and the third line. But it looks fine if shrink the browser window to smaller width.

    Speaking of using this theme without a sidebar. I need to have my logo incorporated some how in a visible display at top. Given the header image does not adjust to the size, I am not able to insert my logo into the header appropriately (it cuts off on smaller screens). I also wish to have Comment widget at the top because otherwise the audience interaction doesn’t show up. I guess I am willing to make a compromise here.

    Thanks.
