twenty twelve: infinite scroll not working
-
Dear WP,
Subject line says it all… my home page is only displaying the latest 7 posts. I can’t get it to scroll. I’m using Win 7 and IE 11. I also use the JAWS 13 screen reader. Could that have anything to do with it?
My blog is:

Please advise!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, I tested your site on IE11/Win 7 and Infinite Scroll worked fine for me.
Here are a couple of troubleshooting steps:
Can you scroll down the Twenty Twelve demo blog normally?
https://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/blog/If you have an issue with Infinite Scroll on the demo, try using another browser, such as Chrome or Firefox
If other browsers are fine and the issue is only in IE11, try temporarily deactivating any browser add-ons or extensions or plugins you may have added. If the issue goes away, reactivate them one by one to find the culprit.
Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kathryn,
Thanks for replying. I tried the Twenty Twelve and Twenty Thirteen demos in IE 11 with all add-ons disabled. I tried with JAWS 13 and the latest version of NVDA.
I got the infinite scroll to work… kind of. If I jump from heading to heading, it doesn’t work. But if I scroll down line by line, it does. Jump back to a previous heading, however, and the front page reverts to the latest 7 posts. Sometimes the front page gets stuck on the last few posts and I can’t get it to scroll back up no matter what I try.
This never used to be a problem. Has there been a change in the way WP implements infinite scroll lately? Has the JavaScript been tweaked? Well, whatever’s happened, my screen readers have taken a sudden dislike to it. I know WP take accessibility seriously. I’m hopeful this matter will be resolved swiftly.
TIA! :)

Thanks for the additional information.
I’ll bring this to our developers so they can have a look and we’ll keep you posted here.

Before I make the report, could you please confirm if you see the same behaviour with another browser, such as Chrome or Firefox? This will help us rule out a browser-specific issue. Thanks!

Hi Kathryn,
I just tested the Twenty Thirteen demo with NVDA 2015.2 and FF 38.0.5 with add-ons disabled. It wouldn’t scroll for me at all unless I clicked on the last post on the page, followed the Previous link from the Post Navigation section of that post’s page, and then returned to the home page. Only then would I find that the next 7 posts had loaded.
JAWS 13 and FF fared a little better. I could scroll down line by line, but it wouldn’t scroll back up. The home page would get stuck displaying the last few oldest posts. :(
I hope the WP developers can replicate this behaviour and squash whatever bug it is that’s causing this problem.
Thanks for taking this issue seriously and please keep me updated.

Thanks for the additional details about Firefox, that’s very helpful and I’ll add that to the issue ticket I’m putting in.
Looks like there were some changes to Infinite Scroll about 7 weeks ago, but I’m not sure whether they are related to the issues you’re having with screenreaders.
To narrow down whether the issue is specific to the Twenties themes, would you mind doing a couple more tests:
Ecto – https://ectodemo.wordpress.com/
Adaption – https://adaptiondemo.wordpress.com/
Thank you very much for all the tests.

Hi Kathryn,
I tried Ecto and Adaption with JAWS and NVDA in IE and FF with similar results as before.
I blog in fits and starts. Sometimes I don’t look in on my blogs for weeks at a time so the changes to Infinite Scroll made back in May you referred to could well be the cause of the problem, imho.
Thanks again for following this up and please keep me in the loop.

Thanks again for confirming that the issue seems to be across themes. I’m discussing this issue with our developers and will keep you posted as I have more news.

Hi again, one of our developers has made some technical changes to the Infinite Scroll functionality on their test site – would you mind having a look here when you have a chance? Let me know if this works better, and which browser/screenreader you used for this test? Thanks!

Hi Kathryn,
The link above has stopped working. I hadn’t completed my testing, but the initial results weren’t good.
Using JAWS and IE, I could scroll all the way down the posts on the front page line by line, but jumping back up the page from header to header caused problems. And sometimes the page would reload apropos nothing.
I was going to do some more tests today, but like I said, the link is broken.
-
Sorry about that – the link is to a developer’s “sandbox,” and the way those work is that the person’s machine needs to be up and running for the site to be live. Due to time zones, unfortunately his machine wasn’t running when you got to testing. Are you available at all in the day during Eastern Time Zone?

Hi Kathryn,
LOL! I live in Ireland. Currently on GMT+1. I tried the link again this evening and David’s sandbox was online.
I tested both JAWS and NVDA in IE and FF with add-ons disabled throughout. I found no real differences across all four configurations of screen reader and browser while interacting with the test blog.
The front page initially loaded with the latest ten posts. The words OLDER POSTS appeared after the last post. Neither screen reader described this as a link, but I clicked on it anyway and the next ten posts loaded. I clicked on it repeatedly until all posts had been loaded. Once or twice when I clicked on OLDER POSTS, the page refreshed and focus moved to the top of the page. I could jump up and down through the headings without any problems.
A big improvement. I like it apart from the occasional unpredictable full refresh. But this new test version of infinite scroll isn’t automatic. You have to click on the OLDER POSTS link to load the next batch of posts.
Maybe David could add a NEWER POSTS link at the top so that there are only ever ten posts on the front page at any one time.

Looks like the Infinite Scroll setting had gotten changed (this is an active development site) before you had a chance to look at the sandbox.
If deactivating Infinite Scroll on your site gives you a better experience, you might want to do that for the time being.
We will keep digging into this and will get back to you with any new info.
Have a great weekend and thanks again for all the testing!
