Twenty twelve two column?

    I am new to wordpress, so please excuse my (probably very easy) question.
    I am using a twenty twelve theme. I have created a child theme and am customizing it. My page currently has two content areas: primary and secondary. The secondary section has a class of ‘widget-area’. In place of this, I would like this to be a full second column who’s content extends to the end of the page so I can have a different background color on this column.
    How do I do this?
