Twenty Twenty-Five Theme-Additional Templates
-
Howdy, folks! I’m following up on my earlier forum thread concerning this theme. I’ve enabled it on my resuscitated blog and am still scratching my head over something.
The Twenty Twenty-Five theme description seems to suggest that there are additional ready-made templates available, but after reading through various Template Support Guides I couldn’t find a description of how I can activate/enable those additional templates. They do not appear in Site Editor>Templates, nor after scrolling through hundreds of Patterns do they appear there. (I’m still a newbie when it comes to Templates.)
I feel like I’m missing something? Thanks for any help.
(I also have questions about the supported “post formats” mentioned on the theme showcase page, but I’ll leave that for another forum thread.)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello @justjennifer,
I had a look at the Twenty Twenty-Five theme page, and I see the part you’re referring to about the theme featuring a versatile set of templates, headers, and footers.
That wording can definitely make it sound like there are extra pre-made templates to pick from, but the theme actually only comes with the default set of templates, such as:
- All Archives
- Blog Home
- Index
- Page (No Title)
- Page: 404
- Pages
- Search Results
- Single Posts
These are the standard layouts used for specific page types across your site. You can read more about them here: https://wordpress.com/support/templates/#common-types-of-templates
To see exactly which templates are available in your site:
- Open your site’s dashboard.
- Go to Appearance → Editor.
- Click Templates.
If you’d like something beyond the defaults, you can also create your own custom templates following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/templates/create-a-template/
Once created, you can then assign that design to any page you like following these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/templates/apply-a-template/
You also mentioned having questions about post formats in this theme, I’d love to hear more about that and help clarify how they work for your setup!

Hi @zikriaahmad411 thanks for the quick response. I’m familiar with the standard templates. So, it would appear that the theme showcase description might be a little bit misleading if you are new to Templates.
All our block themes have the *potential* to be amazing. The question is, how do everyday users implement that amazing potential. In this case, some, but not all, of those “alternate” Templates are Patterns that can be added when creating a new blank template. But, where, for example, can I access the “The news blog has three advanced home page designs to choose from”? Is it only by creating a new homepage template and picking an alternate layout? (And the Template choices in the overlay are not labeled, so it makes selecting a bit harder.)
For rank beginners (of which I’m sort of one in this case) not everything is clear.

Hi @justjennifer,
I hear you, it can definitely feel a little unclear when the theme description mentions those “advanced home page designs.”
Where it says: “The news blog has three advanced home page designs to choose from. The default news single post template includes a sidebar to the right of the content,” it’s actually referring to Blog Post Patterns rather than additional templates.
You can find these patterns in your site by going to:
Appearance → Editor → Patterns → Blog posts, or directly through this link when logged in: https://thewysiwyg.blog/wp-admin/site-editor.php?p=%2Fpattern&postType=wp_block&categoryId=postsThese give you three different news-style blog layouts that you can place anywhere, on your homepage or on any other page. Here’s a guide with the steps to add them: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/block-pattern/
As for your point about “block themes having the potential to be amazing”, you’re exactly right. The real power of block themes comes from the WordPress Site Editor, which lets you create and design nearly any layout you’d like.
Patterns are a great starting point, and from there you can customize or build new templates to really shape things the way you want.
Let me know if you have any other questions or if I can help with anything else!

Awesome! Thanks @zikriaahmad411
When I mentioned about creating a new homepage template, I did test that before posting here. That’s when I saw the overlay with the additional homepage layout options, including the news homepage (or I could only identify one of the three as the news homepage due to no labels/captions). I skipped adding any pattern. Then I decided not to move forward and backed out by clicking on my site logo at the top left in the site editor.
To my surprise, that blank template had already been set as my site’s homepage even though it didn’t have any layout associated with it. I deleted it at Site editor>Templates and thankfully the homepage returned to the default homepage.
An error message (Warning! You are about to set a blank template as your homepage) before leaving the site editor would have been helpful. =:-O
I’ll continue to explore further and if I have any other questions, I’ll post back here.
