TWENTY TWENTY THREE theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I have just updated my site to this theme. It has not be a stress-free experience. Lots of issues. Currently I have two major ones. First with the hamburger icon on mobile view, it takes five (precisely) clicks to get the menu to open. So how do I get this to one?

The other issue(s) is with the blog posts page (● blog). The image is not being featured. Nor is the READ MORE link, which should be at the bottom of each entry.

I only have the minimum paid package so please keep replies doable for that.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there, happy to help today!

To access your hamburger icon menu quicker, let me start by sharing a little context on why it takes so many clicks! This happens because a site’s header and templates are made up of several blocks nested within one another, putting layers of editing tools at your fingertips (but as you’ve found, it can definitely make selecting something in the editor a little more complex!)

I’d strongly recommend making use of List View, available in your editor space – this gives you a hierarchical view of all the blocks that make up your content, and makes it much easier to see and select the specific block you want to work on. More on that here:

List View is an indispensable feature of the WordPress editor that makes it easy for you to work with the blocks on your page. This guide will show you how to make the most of List View. As for your blog page, showing the featured image and the ‘read more’ link can both be done! Your blog page is designed to display featured images, but your posts currently haven’t had a featured image set. You can set that by opening a post, then selecting “Set featured image” under the Post Settings Sidebar on the right.

Finally, you may notice in the site editor the phrase Add “read more” link text beneath your posts. You’ll just need to click your cursor on that text and type “Read More” (or something similar of your liking), and that’ll add that linked text automatically beneath each post! More on that in our Query Loop block guide, which is what powers the posts on your blog page.

I hope this helps! By the way, I noticed while checking out your site that your site includes customized Styles. I’m so glad you’ve played around with those; they’re a great way to build your unified style across the site! Styles are a feature supported by our Premium plan and higher, so you can test out using the styles on your site on any plan, and then when you’re ready, you can upgrade to the Premium plan for those style customizations to be visible to others!

    Thanks for your swift reply.

I am still, if not more confused. Re- the mobile view menu icon, are you saying I need to bring the block to the top of the list to make it work on just one click?

Featured image. I have over one hundred posts. Do you seriously mean I have to go through them all? In my previous theme it was automatic.

Customized styles. Why am I even seeing them (and the really annoying pop-ups asking me to upgrade)? This latest theme is the most irritating and time-consuming one yet. As soon as your engineers (they might espouse happiness but I’m not feeling it) can revert my content back to the former theme the better. Not all of us are wealthy enough to pay Premium. And if WordPress powers so many websites, how about giving a discount to non-profits?

  • Hey there,

Many thanks for reaching back out.

Re- the mobile view menu icon, are you saying I need to bring the block to the top of the list to make it work on just one click?

Not quite – the information provided was related to when it comes to editing the menu in the Site Editor.

The list view can you help you find out where blocks sit with each other in the editor.

Are you saying that you need to press the menu hamburger about 5 times for it to open when viewing the site as a viewer?

Featured image. I have over one hundred posts. Do you seriously mean I have to go through them all? In my previous theme it was automatic.

I’ve taken a look, and I too faced the same problem. I’d recommend perhaps doing the first 10 posts, as these would be the first seen when visited.

To clarify, this wasn’t the case with the previous theme, instead the previous theme showed the content of the post, which show the image as one of the first things in the post.

Customized styles. Why am I even seeing them (and the really annoying pop-ups asking me to upgrade)? This latest theme is the most irritating and time-consuming one yet.

I hear you and I sympathise. Changing themes can be troublesome, and that’s not unheard of.

In an ideal world, would you mind listing the changes you’re eager to make please? We can look toward putting some next steps to lessen some of the heavy lifting involved in a theme change.

And if WordPress powers so many websites, how about giving a discount to non-profits?

It’s not out of the realms of possibility if the premium plan is of interest and this can be seen here. :)

I’m really hoping to help here and looking forward to hearing back from you.

Menu icon. Yes, I meant when using it. It’s okay on an Apple iphone but my Android requires five clicks to open it initially, after that it is fine.

I run another website (https://shetlandcatrescue.co.uk), for a non-profit/ charity, and they rely on me paying the annual WordPress Plan because all their income is spent on helping cats. It would be so much better if the Basic plan was free for such worthy organisations.

That sure is weird! Ok, what device are you using there and what browser is in place on that device?

Duly noted – I can certainly look to pass this feedback on.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

One more glitch. Having opened the first three blogs and set the featured photos as you suggested, indeed the blog post page does show the photos. However if you then click on any of those three blogs you will see there is a new problem. It has added a photo, so now there are two, the latest too dark too see. I tried removing the original photo but it just leaves the dark one. Also, every time I edit won’t it resend the post to my followers? This really is overcomplicated. How do I get it to work normally?

Menu icon on Mobile view. I am using a Motorola G7 and the browser is Opera. I have also tried Google and it’s the same.

Any suggestions for the solving the double photo on blog posts, especially why the recently linked one is fine on the main blog page but dark on the actual blog?

TWENTY TWENTY THREE is definitely a More is Less theme. A bit like TESCO too, every time you shop the cost goes up and the weight of each product goes down.

How can I revert to my previous theme? I can’t remember what it was called, but surely WordPress must know.

  • Hi there,

This is a feature of your theme, where it shows the Featured Image as a large ‘header image’ on the blog post itself. You can edit the “Single Post Template” to remove this though. You can find that here: Single Post Template

If you delete this grey box from the template, it will remove the large dark image from all blog posts:

Also, every time I edit won’t it resend the post to my followers?

Not to worry they are only notified the first time you publish your blog post. You could edit your post a hundred times (after it is published) and they would not be re-notified.

How can I revert to my previous theme? I can’t remember what it was called, but surely WordPress must know.

Your site used a theme (called “Blogum”) that was retired some time ago. It is possible to switch back to a theme if it is still actively offered in our theme directory, but not if it’s been retired. Because of this there is no way to get your old theme back.

However. You may wish to consider one of these themes which is similar:

These are also older themes, so functionally similar to the one you used to have, but they are still themes we offer so you may wish to switch to one of those to have a more familiar experience.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks everyone. My site is now looking a lot less confused. I’ve also learnt a lot along the way.

The MENU icon not working is a worry but it seems other phones don’t have this issue, so it must be something to do with my phone. We’ll get it all sorted eventually.

Keep up the support, the less-techie like me appreciate not being overwhelmed further with jargon we don’t understand.
