Twentyfourteen Theme Header
-
Hi,
I’m trying to customize the Twentyfourteen theme’s header.
The header image size is forced at 1260 wide and 240 high — which is rather strange to start with, as it goes 1920 across the full width of the screen anyway. So, always being streched to 1920, its height becomes a permanent 365 pixels, which is really too high. Hence, I sought to just upload it at 1920×240 (as it’s being stretched to 1920 anyway). It won’t let me, though. And it won’t let me skip the crop process.
So, is there any way to just use a 1920 wide header to begin with?
P.S. This theme is supposed to have flexible headers (which are supposed to be able to do ‘skip crop’).
Someone please tell me how it’s done.
Thanks.

Any word on this yet? I’d like to call the staff’s attention to Custom Header Image
Specifically, the part where it says:
“If your theme supports Flexible Headers, you can also skip cropping—the header image will be added without any cropping so you can use one that is taller or shorter than the size defined by the theme when you crop.”
Twenty Fourteen is supposed to support flexible headers.

Hi there!
The Twenty Fourteen theme’s maximum width is set at 1260 pixels, and that is why the recommended width is 1260 pixels as well. You can see this information under “Quick Specs” on the the theme’s official page:
https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/
I’m not sure why it extends to 1920 pixels for you. Are you viewing your site on a very large screen? If you can provide a screenshot of this happening, that would be great.
Looking forward to your reply. Thank you!

Thx for looking into this.
If only the Theme would follow its own recommendation. :P You can see the scale in effect here:
Funnily enough, the HTML code sets the image size correctly:
<img width=”1260″ height=”150″ …
I’m guessing there’s a CSS override at work anyway, that scales the image to full-width (and, accordingly, larger height).

It looks to me like you might have zoomed in with your browser. Can you try resetting the zoom to 100% in your browser settings?

^^ Hmm, LOL, seems I had it set to 150%. :P My bad.
Still, it actually kinda makes things worse, as now, it turns out, the entire theme is only using half the page!
I would have assumed the sidebars aligned to their utmost left/right position (which is, in part, why I didn’t realize the zoom). So, this Theme is simply not using half the page width?! How quaint!

Speaking of 2014 headers, how do you attribute a photo? I got one from Wikimedia Commons, and the photographer would like attribution. I just can’t figure out how to go about doing it. Thanks.

So, to get back to my question earlier, is Twenty Fourteen really only supposed to span half the page?! (see above). That is such a waste, especially for when you want to show many images.

Keep in mind that everyone’s page size is different. So, on your screen, it may look like half, but on another person’s screen it might fill the browser. It all depends on the viewer’s browser size and settings.
The Twenty Fourteen theme is designed to have a max width of 1260px by default, and the main contain area is also placed at the left side of the screen. It sounds like this might just be a case where you don’t like the way the theme is designed. If you don’t, there are lots of other good ones! Did you consider any of the other options from https://wordpress.com/themes already?

I think if you put a small attribution in a text widget so that it can be found on any page where the image is showing, that would meet the requirement. Maybe try the footer widget area.

@designsimply: I think you may be right. I guess I’m really looking for a Theme that will maximize my screen space. Lotsa pictures to be shown + text inbetween. :)
Thx for the reply, though.

Here are some themes I think are fantastic for displaying images in case you want to take a look!
Nishita has a wide main content area and I’ve seen some really great implementations of it featuring big images. It’s not full width, but the main content container is centered which you might like better than Twenty Fourteen.
http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/nishita/Fontfolio is all about images. Not sure it’s wide enough for you. Look at the demo site and click through to a few pages.

http://fontfoliodemo.wordpress.com/Hemingway Rewritten has a fantastic, large, full-width header. The content column isn’t as wide though.
http://theme.wordpress.com/nishita/In addition, here are a few of the premium themes that feature full frame or wide spaces for images:
