Twentyseventeen, struggling with featured images
-
Hi
I had this problem some years ago, the solution then was to save the featured images in a smaller file size.
But now I get this message, which is not helping:
“The selected image is too small (2000 by 666 pixels). It should have a size of at least 1200 by 675 pixels.”My problem is that on big screens, the featured image does not fill the whole width – and when I save it in a bigger file size, the image gets cropped, instead of being shown corretly.
Blog post where it works fine:

Hi Manuela, the owl picture is much larger than the others but cropped short and wide.
Can you try cropping those images to a similar shape?
Also, just generally speaking, featured images are bound to get cropped, not only on your site, but in social media and in the reader and what not. I’d recommend choosing images that are OK to crop, or always center the subject with plenty of background (like the owl has) so that the cropping won’t matter so much.
Images added as image blocks to the content will not get cropped, so I’d recommend using those as needed.

Also, you might just try uploading larger images, too. Just to note the sizes of the images:
1500×500 — this one did not work
1500×500 — this one did not work
2000×666 — this one didHoping this helps!

Hi supernovia
> 2000×666 — this one did
Got this message when trying to upload a version 2000px wide.
Also this message is wrong, like the first one: the size in the message is _bigger_ than the one I upload.“Post-processing of the image failed likely because the server is busy or does not have enough resources. Uploading a smaller image may help. Suggested maximum size is 2500 pixels.”
Can you please pass this on to a person who can check/change the wording of the error messages?
Thank you :-)

Sure, we’ll just need to duplicate the issue, and as I’ve not been able to do that yet, we’ll need a bit more information.
– Are you uploading directly to https://wordpress.com/media ?
– Do you use an app or a browser?
– Does it matter what browser you’re using?
– Can you get the sizes and formats for a few pictures that are giving you trouble? Let me know the pixel dimensions, file size, and format.
– If you use similarly sized images but not from that same source, do those work fine?
For what it’s worth, here’s what I just uploaded:
– JPG
– 4032x3024px
– 5.4MBI’m using Google Chrome (current) on Mac (current).

Thank you supernovia
Here’s what apparently works at the moment:
– 2000px wide
– uploaded in Chrome browser on MacI’d be glad if you could get the error messages adapted, they are confusing (asking for a minimum width that is smaller than the picture that triggers the message).

Hi there!
Glad to know that it has worked for you! I haven’t been able to replicate the error message on my end, but reading the original error message that you shared:
“The selected image is too small (2000 by 666 pixels). It should have a size of at least 1200 by 675 pixels.”
If you look at the emphasis I added, it looks like the image you uploaded had a height of 666 pixels, which is smaller than the 675 pixels recommended by the theme. In that sense, it does seem like the error message is correct as it didn’t specifically say the width was smaller, rather, it was referring to the whole size in general (1200 by 675 pixels).
