Twitter Card Images
-
Hi! I’m having a weird experience with Twitter cards.
Before I share my blog posts on Twitter, I make sure to run them through the card validator. It always features the first image in my post (which is what I want it to do!) It shows the first image in my post in a small box on the left, followed by a summary.
However, for a reason I can’t understand, all my tweets suddenly changed. They are now featuring random images (sometimes from the middle of my post) instead of the images I originally validated the tweets to show.
The images I choose to be featured are always square. I know that I can manually set a featured image through wordpress, but when I do that and validate the tweet, it changes the format of the card. The image moves above the tweet, it is no longer a square, and Twitter seems to pick a random spot in the image to zoom in. So while I know manually setting a featured image is a solution, it’s not the one I want because it changes the format of the Twitter card.
Any help will be greatly appreciated! I just want all my tweets to go back to the way they were before.
The specific post I’ve been playing around with: https://madelinebartson.wordpress.com/2018/05/25/5-habits-eating-your-writing-time/
This is not the only post that is messed up, though. I want it to show the first image, but for some reason it’s not displaying a picture of Michael Scott. Thanks so much in advance!

Hi there,
Aside from setting a featured image, there’s no way to control which image is used by Twitter. That is determined on Twitter’s end when the link is shared. We suggest to Twitter which image to use, in order of featured image, first useable (over 350px wide) image in the post, site icon/blavatar. But ultimately Twitter decides.
We also have no control over how Twitter zooms, focuses or crops the image.

Thank you, this was helpful! I’m guessing that whatever happened to make all the images in my previous tweets change is out of WordPress’s hands, too? It’s just strange that when I validated my URL, the cards had the right image, but now they suddenly changed.

Can you please provide a link to a post where this happened, and if possible to the tweets showing the wrong image themselves?

This is the one I was specifically working with: https://madelinebartson.wordpress.com/2018/05/25/5-habits-eating-your-writing-time/
And here’s the tweet:
https://twitter.com/madelinebartson/status/1001647306788270080When I first tweeted and validated the card, the very first image in the blog post was used, which was what I wanted. Without me re-validating the card or anything, the tweet just began to pull a random gif from the middle. Every time I put the link back in the Twitter card validator, it continues to use the same random gif as the card image.
Here are some of the other posts it’s not working for: (I don’t know if this is helpful!)
https://madelinebartson.wordpress.com/2018/05/18/297/ (the tweet that links to this post doesn’t even use an image)Here are some of the posts it’s working for: (again, I don’t know if this is helpful!)
Thanks so much in advance for your help! :)

Thanks for the info. Even on the posts you say it is working I see a gif from the post content in the Twitter card rather than the first image in the posts.
Can you please check if explicitly setting a featured image on the post makes a difference? I see you already have Content Options in the Customizer configured to not show the featured image on single posts, so it shouldn’t change how the posts on your site display.

When I explicitly set the featured image, it doesn’t change the look of my blog at all, but it does change the layout of the tweet. Instead of a little square on the right side of the twitter card, the image turns into a rectangle above the card, and it seems to choose a random part of the picture to zoom in on.
