Twitter not showing as referrer in Stats

All of my posts are copied to Twitter. Twitter never shows up in the “referrers” column of the stats page. I logged of WP, deleted cookies, etc. accessed a post via twitter, and logged back into WP to check stats.

    No Joy.

I’m fairly certain I never flagged Twitter as a SPAM referrer, mostly because I only just now learned I could do that (while researching what might be causing this.)

And can I just say, that having a blacklist that I can’t edit after the fact is a bit shortsighted on someone’s part. (People being people will make mistakes.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The motivation behind this is trying to reconcile the mismatch between page counts in the “Referrers” column and the page counts in the “Posts and Pages” column. The “Referrers” column is only accounting for about 20% of the views of “Pages and posts.”

Twitter analytics doesn’t show me click-thru counts, and even that wouldn’t account for anything.

Hard to increase your readership when you can’t figure out who your readers are.

Does any of this get better (more detailed stats) if I upgrade?

  • HI there,

I can see Twitter in your referrers if I look at historic referrer stats, like this link which shows your referrers for the past 7 days:

    https://wordpress.com/stats/day/referrers/wheelgun.wordpress.com?startDate=2017-06-13&summarize=1&num=7

The “Referrers” column is only accounting for about 20% of the views of “Pages and posts.”

That’s normal. First, not all people who visit your site will get there via a link somewhere else. If someone types your URL directly into their browser or click on a browser bookmark, that won’t generate a referrer stat.

Second, there are many services that don’t allow us to see if someone clicked on the link on their site. That’s aside from browser settings and add-ons/extensions that can also prevent us from being able to log that data. The referrers you see in your stats are those that we are able to detect.

WordPress.com stats are the same regardless of your plan level. With the Business Plan you can add Google Analytics, but it also won’t be able to show you information that is unavailable or hidden from the other end of the process.

    Google Analytics

Hard to increase your readership when you can’t figure out who your readers are.

Rather focus on what content on your site gets the most traffic, and at which time of day, and which visitors then went on to click on more links in your site (for this last one you’ll need Google Analytics which allows you to track visitors through a session). Referrer data only tells you where people clicked on links to your site. Much more valuable is knowing what content, published at which times of day, got the biggest reaction and encouraged visitors to interact with your site beyond that first page.
