Twitter sharing feature not displaying short form URL anymore

  Hi!

  I’ve used Twitter with my blog for years. The last three posts I’ve done no longer feature the short form of the url (wp.me/xxxx). Instead, the tweet posts the long form of the URL. I tried resetting the ‘sharing’ set up with Twitter, but it still posts the long url. I also looked at a few posts I have scheduled for the future; under sharing those posts still feature the wp.me short url.

  Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

  Hi Ed,

  We’re making some changes to Publicize, and one of them is exactly what you’re seeing. We had a lot of feedback that folks wanted their site’s web address to be more promiment while sharing on Facebook and Twitter, so we now use the full permalink once it’s shared.

  This change is just now being rolled out to all users, so posts you had already created may not yet display the full permalink in their custom message box – but the change will take place upon sharing with twitter.

  You may also notice on twitter that Publicize will do a better job of sharing image and video files directly to the tweets themselves, saving some readers a click.

  Thanks for the prompt and clear reply, Alex—I appreciate all the hard work y’all do.

  I understand the changes but I’m not crazy about them (longer URLs eat up some of those 140 characters, and image-driven content, without clicks, could lower traffic over time). But maybe I’m just being resistant to change : )
