Two Blogs, One User!

I created another blog from my dashboard and when I posted in that, the user name it showed (posted by) was Kashmir (that’s my main account).

I did not want that, I wanted to post using the blog ID (user name) of the new blog, so I went ahead and changed the settings in ‘My Account’ for ‘Display name publicly as’ to the new blog ID I had got.

Then I signed into my kashmir.wordpress.com and realised that the publicly displayed name remains the same for all the blogs ( am I wrong somewhere?)

In my new blog on the ‘New Post’ page, I thought I could change the author to whichever one I wanted, but no, it only lists ‘kashmir’ as the author and no other ID?

How do I go about posting in both my blogs using the blog IDs as ‘posted by’ ? I do not want to use the same user name for all the blogs, because maybe I want one blog to be private and the other public, and if my user name (posted by) remains same across all IDs, it doesn’t help.

I apologise if I am missing something very simple as the solution to my problem or if the answer was somewhere around and I couldn’t find it.

And I would suggest ‘adding a new blog’ and related information for the FAQ.

    Thanks!

I just tested on my two blogs here and you are correct.

I’ll mention that to the coders. In the meantime all I can suggest is that you have another blog as another user.
    OR
Make a new account here. Just an account. With a new email address. Invite that new user to the private blog.
You then have 2 logins for wordpress.com and therefore 2 names.

I want to to change my displayed name, but it keeps the same as my login name. I’m trying to life whit that, But it is my full name. So thats why I don’t like it so much.

kashmir – I’ve checked and what you desire cannot be done.
A user has an entry in the database for their display name and that display name applies across all blogs that user is associated with.
You’d need to create a separate account.

dennispater – you can change it on your users > profile page.

Thank you for checking it out podz. The workaround, creating a new username, sounds good :)

    Thanks!

Holy moly, I think this is the first time I’ve actually had the same question as someone else and seen it already answered to my satisfaction (although I’d be more satisfied to be able to toggle names between blogs, as Kashmir was hoping to do). Thanks for the work and clear explanations.

podz – Too bad, it would really be usefull if we could create an alias per blog or, at least, define which name (nickname, full name, etc) would be displayed for each blog

It’s really not any trouble to create a separate account for each blog. If you already set up the second blog with your first account, then just create a second account with the ID you want to use there and invite yourself to join. Both ID’s can be members of both blogs. You can go back and forth reading, dashboards, etc. no problem. If you want to post as a specific ID, just check to see that’s the ID you’re logged in as (if not, just log out & log in again as the ID you want to post with).

Once you’ve set up your second account and given it admin or posting privelages, you can just stay logged in to one account and select the name to be displayed in the Post Author dropdown menu. No need to log in and out at all. I have 5 blogs and am only ever logged into this one and just select the proper username when I post on one of my other blogs.
(you won’t see this menu unless you have at least two users with posting privelages)

I dont know if this has any bearing on things, but: in my experience, two diffent wordpress account holders trying to use the same terminal ( in turns without one logging out) – it always comes back to one dashboard always the wrong one- the arrangement doesn’t work, even if married.

As twhit says: “just log out & log in again as the ID you want to post with”

why not create a second account, without adding a blog to that user, and add that user to the blog you want to have a different author name (make sure just list as author and not administrator so security stays high)? Then, when you’re posting, click on the author list and choose the second account name, and whala!!! You got two author names to choose from.

daij: That’s it! I haven’t seen the “Just a username, please.” option, the last time I saw I had to create a new blog for each user.

This has all been really helpful. If I do as daij suggests, does that mean that when I post to someone else’s blog using a particular nickname (author name) that I have associated with one of my three blogs, people clicking on the author name it will go to the blog of my choice (assuming I leave all three of my blogs under the same account)?

In other words, I want some of my posts to other peoples’ blogs to go to a specific blog of mine, not always to the primary blog, because I don’t want the primary blog to be associated with the other two. It’s not that it’s private, but that the primary blog is more personal and the other two blogs are more of a professional, public type of thing.

Sorry if I’m not expressing this well, I am very, very new to blogging and probably the opposite of a tech geek. Any responses to any part of this post would be appreciated (especially if you can read my mind and figure out what it is I’m asking!) Thanks!

When ever you post or post comments, it uses the blog URL from your profile. A user account can have multiple blogs, but only one profile.

If you want to have multiple profiles you’ll need to use multiple user accounts.

You can change your profile so that it doesn’t point to your personal blog.

Thanks, Engtech, this is stated so clearly and simply.

Looks like I’ll need multiple accounts as I want to be able to comment on others blogs and have a choice of which of my blogs would be seen when my nickname is clicked on.

Do you know if I can transfer blogs from my original account to my new accounts?

In your dashboard under “manage” there are Import and Export options.

Import from old, Export to new. Leave feedback if something breaks :)

Don’t delete anything from the old blog for around a month or so until you’re sure you’ve moved everything properly.

sunburntkamel britgirl and I created a resource for exporting and importing blogs. This may be helpful.

    Thanks, Engtech

I now have three blogs on one account. I want to keep the domain names (e.g., domain.wordpress.com)for the blogs I’ve created when I transfer them to a new account. Is that possible? How do I do that?
