Two CNAME's?

  • Unknown's avatar

Email is driving me a little crazy.

My CNAME is set up – *.nancygoldsteinphoto.com.

Do I need a separate CNAME for my email (mail.nancygoldsteinphoto.com), or does the * take care of it?

    Thank you.

    Hi Nancy,

If you’re setting up a custom email address through a third-party app, you’ll need to setup an additional CNAME record. Can you let me know what service you’re using for your email account?

Just a note, instructions can be found here:

    Register.com does my email.

My URL is working fine. DNS’s at Register.com are:
    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

    Current records are:
    A nancygoldsteinphoto.com handled by WP
    NS nancygoldsteinphoto.com handled by WP
    CNAME *.nancygoldsteinphoto.com handled by WP
    MX mail.nancygoldsteinphoto.com handled by mx05.register.com
    MX mail.nancygoldsteinphoto.com handled by mx06.register.com

    Hi Nancy,

Thanks for sending these over. It looks like you have everything setup correctly. I’m not familiar with the DNS records required by Register.com for their mail to work correctly. You may need to check with them to make sure you have input everything. Back to your original question, if Register.com requires a CNAME record, you’ll have to enter that manually (the default WordPress.com CNAME will not cover it).

Please let me know if you have any additional questions!

Exactly! Everything I’ve read tells me it should work.

I’ve been through this before, successfully. I’ve been able to get things to work when I was at both SmugMug and Zen, but not this time. Register is the problem; they just don’t play nice with others. The only way to solve it is to drop them in favor of either Dreamhost or Bluehost.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hey Nancy,

I’ve done a bit of investigation, and it looks like you might need the following CNAME record:

    CNAME mail mxmail.register.com.

My assumptions are based on this thread:

    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/e-mail-dns-records-on-registercom?replies=8

Can you try entering that CNAME record under your domain settings (Dashboard -> Store -> My Domains -> Edit)? I’m happy to add it for you if you would like.

I’m in the middle of a big project and can’t do this right now. I’ll give it a try in a few days and let you know. Thanks again.

Not a problem Nancy! Please let me know if you run into any trouble or can’t get this working correctly.

I’m waiting for the changes to propogate, but this is how it’s set up now.

    A nancygoldsteinphoto.com > WordPress.com
    NS nancygoldsteinphoto.com > WordPress.com

    CNAME *.nancygoldsteinphoto.com > WordPress.coM

    CNAME http://www.nancygoldsteinphoto.com > alias of
    nancygoldsteinphoto.com
    (DO I EVEN NEED THIS?)

    CNAME mxmail.register.com > alias of nancygoldsteinphoto.com

    MX mail.nancygoldsteinphoto.com > mx05.register.com 10

    MX mail.nancygoldsteinphoto.com > mx06.register.com 10

Finally, the DNS servers at Register have been changed to
    ns1.wordpress.com
    ns2.wordpress.com
    ns3.wordpress.com

If you see anything wonky please let me know. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will fix everything.

    Hey Nancy,

I would suggest just a few adjustments.

    CNAME http://www.nancygoldsteinphoto.com > alias of
    nancygoldsteinphoto.com
    (DO I EVEN NEED THIS?)

No – you shouldn’t need that setup for the www version of your domain to work correctly.

    CNAME mxmail.register.com > alias of nancygoldsteinphoto.com

    Currently, this record reads as:

    mxmail.register.com.nancygoldsteinphoto.com alias of nancygoldsteinphoto.com.

    I believe it should read:

    mail.nancygoldsteinphoto.com alias of mxmail.register.com.

Can you try editing that record if your email doesn’t start working correctly soon?
