Hey there,
Check out the theme notes here: https://codex.wordpress.org/Twenty_Seventeen#One_and_Two_Column_Layouts
I am assuming you are using Twenty Seventeen. You can change the column layout in the Customizer under Theme Options

Hi Rachel – you need to select a static front page first, in your Customizer‘s Static Front Page panel. Once you do, the Theme Options panel will be displayed.
jjchrisdiehl – thanks for pitching in! That guide is intended for self-hosted sites. The guide for Twenty Seventeen on WordPress.com can be found here:

Perfect, thank you! It seems to be working now. Is there a way to get only an excerpt of the content from each of the featured pages to show up on the static home page (rather than the entire content from that page?).
-
My mistake Kathryn! In the guide supplied by Kathryn you will see a section called One- and Two-Column Layouts about half way down the page.

Rachel – great, glad that did the trick!
Is there a way to get only an excerpt of the content from each of the featured pages to show up on the static home page (rather than the entire content from that page?).
There isn’t a way to display an excerpt automatically because excerpt-related features in WordPress generally only apply to posts, not pages. You could create something manually – for example, create a second page with the full content, and then link to it from the page you’ve used in your panel.
Let me know if you need any help with that.
jjchrisdiehl – no worries. :)
