two differnet issues

    Home

    First
the “Front page”, this page can’t be edited so I redirected the first page to be there. So now I have a wasted nav button at the top that takes you to “about us” but says “front page”. How do I remove the page “front page” entirely? It’s not even listed in the pages under manage. I don’t know how to get to it.

Second problem. “Your School Board” has a 404 error page can’t be found. The static url or permalink is http://betterlorainschools.wordpress.com/your-school-board/ when I open the page in manage it shows it but when you search it gives a 404 error

“Front page” is the blog page. It is always active and cannot be removed. That is the page that the posts show up on. You can make another page and name it what you want, and then in settings > reading set the page you created as the “post page”. That will remove the “Front page” link and replace it with the page you made.

Well I did as you said, and Front page is still showing. Under Settings/ Reading I have several options I have tried all of them

    Front Page never goes away.

Front page displays: Your latest post
A Static page (this options has a drop down of page choices)

I want my homepage to be about us and my blog page to be updates and information. What buttons do I select and which radio button do I use to remove “front page” I have tried every combination and nothing changed.

what about the 404 error? Is there a place to change links on each page that go to other pages?

To make About us the front page, try making it a child page of another page first. Then select this page as your Front Page. Then select Updates and Information as your Posts page.

  • Unknown's avatar

Set “updates and information” as the post page under settings > reading. That page will have to be blank though (nothing in the text area) so you will have to edit it before making it your post page.

  • Unknown's avatar

you wouldn’t need to make it a child page
because then the page wouldn’t show if they have
    tab navigation on there site…

  • Unknown's avatar

    @teck
If they want About Us to be the front page then there is essentially no need for an extra “About Us” tab, which is why you can hide that tab by making About Us a child page.

We rigged it up, not what I wanted but at least we can live with it. The page “Front Page’s” name can’t be changed an FYI to anyone having the same issue.

Under Settings/ Reading- I selected “a static page” radio button and under “front page” chose “About Us”

I could not get rid of the name “Front Page” I did have to make the “About Us” a child to Updates & Information. If I didn’t it would have had its own link at the top of each page, this made a duplicate page.

This is some crazy non intuitive software.

I just tried it on one of my test blogs, and you are right, the “front page” link does not go away.

    There is something wrong somewhere.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @TSP
But should the Front Page link go away? I think that tab is a part non-changeable of the theme. It’s “Home” in some themes and “blog” in other themes. There’s no way to make it go away, except with the CSS Upgrade maybe?

  • Unknown's avatar

Both Front page and About go to the “about” page (which is set as the static page). Updates and information works properly and shows the blog posts.

I’ve sent a support ticket in and as soon as I hear back, I’ll post what they say here.

  • Unknown's avatar

Why would you want two links in the top navigation that take you to the same page – in this case the about page?

I’m still playing with things, but for some reason I can’t get back to my test blog admin. Something at wordpress is borked at the moment. I can reach all my other blogs just fine.

I just switched to Mistylook, and it keeps the “home” tab as well, so it must be how it is designed. This sucks, it shouldn’t be that way. The home, or the front page tab should disappear.

    This makes no bloody sense.

  • Unknown's avatar

wpvstp is right: the “Front Page” tab can’t be removed – it’s a permanent feature of Cutline, equivalent to the “Home” of other themes.

  • Unknown's avatar

You would think though, if you set a static page, and set a new page as the post page, that the old “front page” or “home” tab would be removed otherwise, you end up with two links to the static front page, which will just confuse things.

    This makes no bloody sense.

Thanks, Jen. Now I’m going to bookmark that test blog of yours so I won’t loose it again.

Regarding the 404 issue, I’m realizing when I change something and save, the system doesn’t automatically update things in real time. I learned if I make a change to get out of the site and come back in to see if I really fixed things. That resolved the issue. All my links are working. Thanks for everyone’s help.

So the issue is the template I’m using?

  • Unknown's avatar

@ladalang-No, Cutline works fine with a static front page. But you can’t change the Tab’s title of “Front Page” because it’s hard coded in the theme. On other themes it’s called “Home”.

Make sure you follow exactly the instructions in those two WordPress.com FAQs listed on my test blog’s Home Page. I’d try now, but it’s really quite late here, almost to the point of being early. ;)
