Two Domain Names – One Blog?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey there,

I recently bought a new URL that I think is easier to remember and better branding. However, I’m JUST starting to get regular, natural traffic without actively pushing things on social media (I’d love to know where they’re coming from but alas…).

So what I was wondering if I took my new URL and mapped it to my site would all my posts still show up on both oldurl.com/blahblah as well as newurl.com/blahblah? Do you know if that would hurt me with search results and SEO? I’d likely rebrand and slowly phase out the old name but maintain the URL.

    Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

You should be able to use both domains to direct traffic to the same website.

If you map both domains and set the desired domain name as the primary, the secondary domain will redirect to the primary one that you would prefer: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/

I don’t believe that adding a second URL to access your blog would hurt your search results; in fact, your website might show up in multiple places with different names. =)

    I hope that helps.

Awesome, that’s what I was hoping to hear. Do you know if it’ll create orphaned links or will they know to redirect to the appropriate post?

WordPress.com is so efficient that domain mapping a second URL shouldn’t create any orphaned links; if my understanding is correct, one URL will redirect to the other one, so (if my understanding is correct) whichever your primary domain name is, that’s the one that will ultimately pop up, no matter with URL a client uses to look up your website. =)

So for example, my first URL (not an independent .com name, but similar) was sierraecho89.wordpress.com. When people click that link, it will take them to “thepamperedflock.com”–if I added another domain name (like cutebirds101.com) to my WordPress and changed THAT to my primary address, when people typed in “ThePamperedFlock.com”, they will be taken to cutebirds101.com.

I hope that helps! =) WordPress.com is extremely efficient.

Yes, thanks! But I just want to confirm it would do that on individual post links. Say someone searches for a particular story, my old URL shows up on google, they click that will they go back to the home page or will they go to the appropriate post under the new URL?

    Hope my question makes sense

I believe that, as long as you keep paying for both domains to keep them active, your readers should be able to find previous articles through the old links, especially if you bought your second domain through WordPress.com–their software should simply redirect the old link to the new URL. =)

If you do not keep your domains current and up-to-date, however, that will result in dead links, so just make sure you renew both your domain names in a timely fashion.
