Two-Factor Snafu
-
Using an alternative account for this request.
I’m presently locked out of my two-factor secured account, username dunlapw. I had backup codes that got lost in a computer transfer, and my authenticator app did not back up and restore properly due to a software snafu. The phone number associated with my account is no longer active, as well.
This leaves me without the ability to access my account—which, according to the support site, means I’m out of luck. I’m hoping someone out here can help, as a search of the forums shows that others got help.
Can anyone help me?

Hi Kyle,
I would be more than happy to assist you in regaining access to your account. If you could please fill out our account recovery form, we’ll definitely get in touch with you as soon as possible. If you still have access to the e-mail associated with the account, we should be able to help you.
Please visit our support page for more information on recovering your account.
Thanks!

I’ve tried using the account recovery form, but I no longer have an activation key (I started the account years ago and deleted the email back before I knew the benefits of archiving) and I’m not using any paid services. Without those two things (or a two-factor authentication key, which is my main issue at the moment), the form won’t submit. :(

Is it possible to recover the e-mail address that is associated with the account?
The e-mail will verify ownership and I would then be able to assist you in regaining the account. From what I can see, that would be your best bet at the moment.
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

I do have access to that email address, or I should. When I attempted a password reset, thinking it may reset the two-factor authentication (spoiler: it didn’t), it sent it to the correct email.
Thank you again for your help. :)

Hi there,
What I can do is e-mail the address associated with the account so that you can check all of your e-mails and see which one receives the message. All you would need to do is respond from that e-mail to verify ownership. Then, I will definitely be able to assist you in regaining access.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Darnell,
Go for it. I’ll keep an eye out. Thanks so much, you’re being super helpful! :)

Hey Kyle,
I sent the e-mail about 22 hours ago. You never received it? be sure to check your spam folder, for it sometimes ends up there.
Thanks!
-
Did you send it for the account “dunlapw” or the one I’m posting from? I’ve checked my spam folder and my trash folder (I’ve got some filters set up that could go awry) and I see my password change email, but nothing more recent.

Hey Kyle,
I sent it to the e-mail associated with the account dunlapw – I will need a response from that e-mail to verify ownership.
Thanks!

Darnell,
I’ve double checked that email and I still don’t see any emails from WordPress or anyone with that address in any of my folders. I’ve even used the search function, to no avail. :(
I know this is a pain. I’m sorry. :(

If it helps, I just tried logging into the site using the email address I’m monitoring (it’s a gmail account) and it leads me to the two-factor verification page, so I know you have the right one. I’m just not getting the mail. :(

Hi there,
I resent the e-mail to the one on file. It’s an university e-mail if that helps =)
Thanks!
-
I don’t have access to that one any more — I just checked. It shouldn’t be a university email, though, since this account (dunlapkw) is tied to it. Should be a gmail account. :/

Okay, you’re right.
Check your gmail account and let me know if you received the e-mail. I see recent activity under the account.
Thanks!

Just wanted to check back in and drop you a line and a thank you. My issue is now resolved and I can finally access the account. I’ve corrected the phone number for 2FA and added an authenticator app, so this shouldn’t happen again.
Thank you again for your help!
