Two plugin ideas: lightbox & qTranslate

I was hoping to avoid self hosting, as I love the community here at WordPress.com about as much as I love WordPress itself.

However, there are two important things missing that are making me consider a move:

    1. a lightbox (a simple one; not an awkward gallery-based workaround) and

    2. multi-language support. Something along the lines of qTranslate Plus, for instance.

I would happily go Premium instead of moving to a self-hosted solution, if it included these two plugins.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I realize that you’ve posted this in the Ideas forum, but to help Staff better understand your requests

Tell us what plugin you want (check!), where it can be downloaded and most importantly, why you think it should be included on WordPress.com.

Also, just pointing out that you can insert even a single image using the Gallery feature, so not clear what advantage Lightbox may have. See here:

As far as translations, I do agree with you and would be very happy to see a fuller translation capability here. However, there are code restrictions in place. Regardless, timethief, another forum volunteer, has posted a couple workarounds on her site. See here: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/02/14/translation-widget-for-wordpress-com-blogs/

Thank you so much for the fast response – and apologies for my slow one :)

While it’s true that there is a Gallery workaround to using Lightbox, let’s consider the steps involved:

To upload an image using Lightbox:

    1. Click Add Media
    2. Select Image
    3. Select alignment
    4. Click OK

To do the same thing using Gallery:

    1. Click Add Media
    2. Select Image
    3. Create Gallery
    4. Create New Gallery
    5. Insert Gallery
    6. Go into Text mode
    7. Use CSS/html to manually add alignment (assuming you want text-wrapping – something that Gallery sadly lacks support of)

I think you can see why I still think adding Lightbox to the native plugins sounds much more user-friendly :)

As for translations, I’m not looking for an automatic way to translate a page. I’m looking for a way to support multi-language blogs. With qTranslate Plus, when you compose a new Post you get as many tabs as the languages you have selected. Inside each tab, you enter the text you wish. For example, I want to have an English/Greek blog. I would be the one to provide the translated text. The posts might even have different content, depending on the audience.

    Hope this clarifies it :)

    Thanks again,

    N.

It does clarify and I agree that it would be nice to have some kind of alignment feature for those rare times when I insert a single image with the Gallery feature. By default, the Gallery feature is meant to fill the entire width of your theme’s content area.

By the way, love what you’re doing with the feature here: http://nicholasrossis.me/childrens-books/

    Best wishes!
