Two posts disappearing within hours of posting them
-
Hi, sorry to bother you,
Today was the second time a post I had just published (1-2 hours prior) simply vanished. It had definitely been published as someone had already liked it. Now it’s simply gone.
The first time the same happened – I blamed it on my internet connection and potentially closing the window before the publishing process was completed (although the draft was meant to be saved anyway and had just disappeared as if it had never existed).
Any clues on what causes this and how to fix it?

Thank you in advance for a response.

Hi there, what were the titles of the posts that disappeared.
Where you creating the posts at My Sites > Posts or through the WP Admin dashboard?
What browser were you using?
-
Sorry, I was looking at the wrong page. I see a lot of trashed posts. Can you look and see if they happen to be in the trash? Go to My Sites > Blog Posts and click the the Trashed link at the top to see the listing of posts in the trash, but not yet deleted.

Hi, thank you for replying.
No, they were not in the trash. I looked everywhere and eventually had to write them again.
The common aspect I figured out was having written those two posts using the improved editor. I don’t normally do that and haven’t experienced post disappearing before. When I wrote them again I used the normal editor and they are still up.
So possibly that was it. I’ll just stick to that.
Thank you again.

Hi,
The first was titled – “The media in murder trials – dumpster scavengers” (the one that disappeared after I hit the “publish” button, with the draft disappearing as well).
The other was “Snobbery – the stratospheric nose” – the one which was definitely up for a few hours as someone liked it.
I don’t need to recover them; I was just curious what had happened.
Thank you again.

Hi theartistryofglorifiedbullshit,
I’ve found the published versions of each post:
https://theartistryofglorifiedbullshit.wordpress.com/2018/07/17/snobbery-the-stratospheric-nose/
There are multiple revisions for “The Media In Murder Trials – Dumpster Scavangers” going back 5 days and the Like from a week ago is still on the post — which suggests it wasn’t deleted. When you say the post vanished, are you referring to the content or were you unable to find the published post on your site at all?

Hi,
Thank you for your time and help.
With regards to the second post, I wrote and published it again the same day it vanished, as the information was still fresh.
Yes, it disappeared altogether, which was strange. Because the draft at least should have been saved; it took a good couple of hours to write and during this time it is supposed to be saved automatically. So even if the publishing process failed due to my bad internet connection, the draft should have been there still.
I think it has something to do with using the improved editor as that is the only commonality with these two posts and the only difference compared to the rest.
Thanks again.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear you had to re-write your posts, that’s not the writing experience we want to create. I’ve spent some time trying to replicate your experience so we can report it to our development team.
With the improved editor, you should notice a status bar in the top right of the screen letting you know if a draft has been saved. This area can also be manually clicked to save a draft. Here’s a screenshot of that portion of the editor:

If you can provide us with as much detail as possible, that would be helpful. Some questions from the top of my head are:
– Did you enter a post title before you started writing?
– Do you remember seeing the “Saved” message in the top right?
– Anything else you can remember.
– Were the images you uploaded still in the media library or were they gone too?If possible, replicating the problem and letting us know step-by-step would be great. I’d recommend copying your post to the clipboard and/or a text editor as you write to prevent any loss.
Thanks for working with us to narrow down any bugs and make our service better.

Hi, thank you again for your time.
With the first post, I don’t remember if I entered a title first, but I normally do, so it’s likely. Yes, I remember seeing the “Saved” message in the top right. I don’t remember whether I’d uploaded an image or I did that after re-writing it.
The second post was based on earlier drafts and I just copied the images from them, without uploading new ones. The same happened; there was no trace of it. I think it was up for 3 or 4 hours, actually.
Thank you again.

When you start a post, first enter a title and manually click the Save button, even if it shows it autosaved.
Since we can’t be sure what is going on with this right now, the other thing I would suggest is to do a select all every once in a while and copy it to your clipboard and then again, manually save the post or page. Also right before you publish, switch to the Text/HTML tag and do a select all and copy to your clipboard and then save that into a plain text file just in case things go awry.
I know this sounds like a pain, but this is what I used to do than many, many years ago.
