Two questions about videopress

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m thinking of using videopress (I know I’d need to have the premium membership first) but want to know three things first:

    1. if it’s HTML5 or Flash?

    2. If there are any restrictions on my having my blog’s settings on discouraging search engines as that’s how I have them now and would like to keep them like that.

    3. If it is at all compatible with screen readers.

    Many thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Sorry to bump this, but I really would like to know.

  • Hi @quietseason, sorry we didn’t see this earlier! We use whatever the viewer’s system supports. You can force HTML5 only if you’d like, though. More details here:

Oh and no, this doesn’t change your site’s search engine settings.

About the screen reader, which features are you looking for there specifically? We do always try to make things more accessible, for what it’s worth.

Thanks for your reply, supernova. So, the videos play in a particular format dependant on whether Flash or HTML5 are available in the viewer’s browser, but they are available as both so the browser software selects it, is that right? (Sorry if I seem a bit dense on this!)

I’m not looking for specifics for the screen reader, it’s just that I have at least two followers who are blind and partially-sighted and my own vision is going downhill so it’s made me more aware of how I post. I enquired (and had a reply) a while back about the ALT field in the media library’s image settings, so this is just an extension of that, really. One of my followers recently blogged about a screen reader app, and I’m just trying to stay aware.

By the way, my blog is not commercial, I would just like to avoid sites like Youtube, etc.

  • @quietseason yeah, we will play whatever their browser best supports.

If you’d like, you’d be welcome to try Premium out. We do have 30 days cancellation for the plan itself, and you’d be welcome to upload a video and see how it works for your friends.

That’s a good idea. Thanks. I’ll probably do that next month. Thanks for your help, I’ll mark this resolved, now.

  • Cheers @quietseason :)
