Two questions concerning static page and themes

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ll start with two simple questions.

1). Can I change back and forth between having a static page (website) and just having a blog? In other words, once I change from blog to website, is it permanent? I see in the dash board what appears to be switchable, but nothing on or about wordpress is as it appears or works as described, so I assume I am wrong about everything.

2). If I changed themes do my menus, pages and everything remain or would I need to start over? In other words, aside from minor changes in layout and such does everything I did in the previous theme remain and is it the same if I switch back to a previous theme?

My bottom line goal is to not destroy my site like what happened when I added a category widget once.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Yes.

    No.

Here are the main gotchas to watch out for after switching themes:

    Custom Menus

If your custom menu has gone missing after a theme switch, reassign it to the location you want it in the new theme. Each theme supports different locations, so visit My Sites → Menus or WP Admin → Appearance → Menus to reassign them as you wish.

    Widgets

If any of your widgets are missing or in an unexpected spot, you’ll want to get the back where they should be. Like Custom Menus, each theme supports different widget locations. If any widgets seem to be missing, never fear – they should be resting safely in the Inactive Widgets section of the Widgets-management page in WP Admin (Appearance → Widgets) and can be reassigned to your desired widget location from there.

    Custom CSS

When you switch themes, your custom CSS editor will be reset to a blank slate, because most custom CSS is theme-specific. You can still access past custom CSS though, at the CSS revisions link located at My Sites → Customize → CSS.

    Thank you Kathrynwp.
I don’t know what CSS is and obviously I don’t use it or need it.
That said, I can now think about changing themes without much worry or fear should I need to or want to.
