Two starter questions about domain names.

    1. How can I try the free WP website builder to make sure I like without registering a domain name? Right now it makes me enter a domain name before trying the ‘free’ level, I haven’t seen this on other platforms. I will eventually get a paid account and a domain name for the platform I choose but want to try it 1st. And aren’t subdomains free on the free accounts, can be used until one decides to purchase a domain? Seems like I’m missing something.
    2. Will I own my domain name if I buy it from/create it with WP or transfer my own from another host to WP? Down the road, can I as owner of the domain transfer to a new, non-WP, platform if need be (or does WP own it now)? The help sections on this seem a little unclear to me.

Sure thing. There’s no need to pay for a site, and you can certainly use the free option. Try clicking on the free plan option at the top of https://wordpress.com/pricing/ and let me know if you’re able to proceed with registering a free site.

We don’t take ownership of any of your content. If you want to move the site down the road, you can do that. The domain can stay with us or you can move it. No problem with any of that.
