Hi there!
The Google Authenticator app should be giving you six digit codes to log in with. How long are the codes you’re getting?
What type of device are you using the app with? Codes are time sensitive, so make sure you’re using the code that’s still displayed in your app.
Can you try completely closing the app and restarting it? Here’s some info on closing apps on the latest iOS:

I use the authenticator app on an iphone 5. I have closed the app and restarted the phone. When I try to use a google code i receive “error: invalid verification code.” I am currently using the SMS recovery code, which is 8 digits, every time I want to log in but I would prefer to correct this issue.

It sounds like your app and your account may be out of sync. Can you disable and re-enable two factor authentication? Here are directions for disabling two factor authentication:
And here are directions for re-enabling it with the Google Authenticator app:
