Two-Step Authentication and New Phone Number
-
Hi everyone,
I am trying to change my phone number for two-step authentication which requires me to disable two-step authentication. However, to disable two-step authentication, I need to get an SMS message at the phone number listed–but I have that number.
The problem is that I changed this phone number about two months ago, and I cannot receive an SMS text at that old number. I have pasted what WordPress says below. Is there any other way to change the phone number assocated with the account? I do have the backup codes, but they don’t seem to matter. I also have the app on my phone, but again, it doesn’t seem to matter with regards to this issue. It seems that if I don’t have access to the old phone, I cannot disable
From WordPress:
Disable Two-Step AuthenticationYou are about to disable Two-Step Authentication. This means we will no longer ask for your authentication code when you sign into your account.
This will also disable your Application Passwords, though you can access them again if you ever re-enable Two-Step Authentication. If you decide to re-enable Two-Step Authentication, keep in mind you’ll need to generate new backup codes.
To verify that you wish to disable Two-Step Authentication, enter the verification code from your device or a backup code, and click “Disable Two-Step.”
Verification CodeA code has been sent to your device via SMS. You may request another code after one minute.

PS: I updated my phone number under “account security” but it still is showing the old phone number under two-step verification.

Hi there,
If you have access to the backup codes generated when you first enabled the two-step authentication you can use one of them to disable the authentication.
Then, when you enable it again, you’ll be able to enter your new number.
Also, the phone number under the account security tab is for account recovery purposes.
