two step authentication doesn't work

  • Unknown's avatar

Ever since I succumbed to your two step authentication I cannot sign in. My “Master Password” was [removed] and now that doesn’t work. and it’s not asking for an authentication code like it said it was going to. So how the hell can I sign in anymore? I have been locked out of my own blog! on my iPhone, on my iPad, on my iMac. I am frustrated.

    Hi Laura,

Sorry you are having trouble with the two step authentication. Can you describe what happens when you try to logon given that you aren’t being prompted for an authentication code? From the login page, after entering your Username and Password, then pressing the Log In button, you will be greeted by the following:

Please enter the verification code generated by your Authenticator mobile application.

At the bottom of the Verification Code box, you need to click on the link at the bottom ‘Send recovery code via SMS’. At that point, a code should be sent to your mobile device. Is this not happening?

By the way, when you are finally able to logon, please change your password right away since you just posted it on this forum.

Yes- I realized after I posted that this was a public forum! Yikes!
    1) Yesterday I set up the two step authentication via my iPhone and iPad, downloaded the Google Authenticator onto my iPhone, it read the code on my iPad, and I followed the steps, including writing down all the backup codes (I couldn’t print where I was) and succesfully enabled two step authentication. At that point I was logged in and all was well.
    2) I tried to log into WP via my iPad later on yesterday, and it asked for my login and password. It then told me my password failed. I tried on my iPhone. it failed. Somehow I got in via Safari on my iPad to post, but then when I tried to reply to a comment it said that I had exceeded my logins for one day.
    3) today I tried logging in via Safari on the iMac, and again it only asked for my login and password and my password failed.

I do not see the “Please enter the verification code generated by your authenticator mobile application” because my password fails yet it doesn’t give me an option to reset my password. So strange.

Wait! I just tried it on my iMac and it worked just as you said. I have changed my password.

BUT! When I try to login via my iPhone I get this message:

    Couldn’t sync
It looks like your connection has been broken. Try disconnecting from WordPress.com and then reconnecting.

THIS is what my ipad and iphone was dealing me all last night since the two step authentication change.

OK- So I can login using the two step authentication just fine via Safari- but I cannot login anymore using the WP app.
I have deleted it and re-loaded it, only to find that it will not accept my username and password. This same username and password works like a breeze now with two step authentication just logging in via the internet.
    ???
    App trouble not cool. ;-)

    Hi,

Sorry you are still having trouble on your mobile devices, but am glad you got it to work on your iMac so you can at least change the password. Here’s a link to the WordPress iOS forum. Perhaps they can help you there.

Best of luck and sorry I couldn’t assist further.

    Hi Laura,

By the way, are you using the application password on the mobile app? That might be the difference.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve had the exact same problem with the mobile device and the two-step authentication. Not resolved.
And it isn’t resolved. I also did not realize that when I submitted my question that it would be posted to a public forum and would not be able to delete the question.

Thanks everyone- It feels oddly comforting to not be alone in this.
And I am using my WP username and password. It shouldn’t be different from signing into WP via the web, should it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Meaning- I am using the same username and password for the WP app as for logging into the website.

  • Unknown's avatar

If you want to use the WP App and you have two step authentication enabled, you’ll need to set up an application specific password. The steps for this are described at http://en.support.wordpress.com/security/two-step-authentication/#application-specific-passwords

I’ve just sent you a recovery code by e-mail so you can get into your account through the desktop browser.

You can reply to the e-mail if you have any further questions.

    Thank you.
