Two step authentication sms not received
-
For the last 2 days I haven’t received the sms code when logging in. I’ve had to use backup codes both times. I wanted to check to see if the code is actually being sent. I’ve checked my phone and I have no trouble receiving other texts.
There have been times in the past when the sms code was sent but it was delayed by hours. But yesterday and today the codes never arrived at all.
Incidentally, the first backup code I tried from my list wouldn’t work – it said the code wasn’t valid.
Thanks for any help you can give.

There could be various reasons why SMS verifications codes are not arriving on your mobile phone – carrier blocking SMS, delays at your carrier’s end or other apps on your phone blocking SMS from being shown.
Since you have confirmed that you are facing issues with SMS from other networks, here is what I am doing.
I have added a tag “modlook” to this topic. One of the members from the WordPress.com staff/WordPress.com Happiness Engineers should be able to check what is causing issues and help you through it.

Thanks strikebuys. Just had the same problem again logging in to post this reply.
BTW I don’t have other apps on my phone because I don’t have a smartphone. I use one of those old stone age phones!
But I didn’t say I was having problems with sms from other networks. I can receive text messages, it’s just the verification sms texts that aren’t coming through for some reason.
Thanks again.

Hi Liz – I haven’t contacted them – EE are notoriously bad at dealing with these kinds of things and they’ll only send me back to you. Life’s too short.
Like I said, I’m NOT having any problems with other texts and I have received other sms codes to login to other sites without any problems. It’s only the code coming from WordPress that isn’t turning up. And it’s not even delayed – the texts aren’t arriving at all.
I was wondering if it had anything to do with the fact that you recently changed the login page. I had no problems before you changed the login to ’email’ rather than ‘username’.
Should I switch off 2-step authentication and then re-apply it?

lizkarkoski, if it helps I had troubles with receiving WordPress.com verification codes on my mobile number last month too.
I reached out to the WordPress.com support team over email, shared my mobile number and carrier name. It took some time to resolve, but in 2 weeks time, the issue was fixed and I started receiving SMS on my mobile number.
The carrier was Airtel and I am from India.

jesdavidson – Have you tried using an app instead of sms messaging for 2 factor? Something like Authy. Let me know if you’re able to get a code from us through an app.
-
lizkarkoski – I don’t have a smartphone so I can’t use any other apps to log in.
I just tried logging in using Google – I have that set up with 2-step authentication too – and I got that sms code through with no problems. But then I had to log in to WordPress as usual in order to connect the accounts – and the sms code from WP never arrived.
It definitely seems to be a problem with WordPress.

Ok – I set up Authy on Chrome then disabled 2-step authentication via my phone and set it up through Authy instead. Managed to get a code through that and logged in.
But I don’t like this app at all and would much rather use my phone. When it generates a code for WordPress it comes up with a Phishing alert.
I’ll use this for now but I’m not happy with it.
-
Continuing from previous comment – sorry, I should’ve made it clear that I’m using Authy as a Chrome extension, not on a phone. Maybe that’s why it’s coming up with a phishing alert.
-
The phishing alert shows up on Authy for Google Chrome when you view the code for a certain website when you are not on that website.
Authy is a great app, jesdavidson. I use it too. It’s safe and secure to use. Make sure you have your WordPress site open and click on the Authy icon while you are on the same tab. When you do that, the phishing alert would not show up.
But, I understand that you would wish to receive WordPress.com verification code as SMS instead.
Hope this clarifies things!

strikebuys – I just tried that – logged in with the WordPress login tab open on the same tab – and it still came up with a phishing alert. Maybe I haven’t set it up properly.
-
Strange. This ideally should not happen. You can speak to Authy customer support here https://support.authy.com/hc/en-us if you are interested.

Thanks strikebuys, I’ll look into it. I suspect it might be because I’m running an old browser – need to update all my software.
