Hi there. Just to clarify, you’re trying to activate it, you’re not locked out of your account?
-
Hi again kokkieh, You’re busy with me…lol. ;O0
Yes, I am trying to Activate it.
But, I’ve just had a thought (it does happen occasionally…).
I am in Private mode at present and won’t be launching to the public probably for a while yet. Therefore, is it possible that this process does not activate/complete until such time as one has gone Public? -
No, the two-step verification has to do with your account, and not with the status of any blogs in your account.
I’ll tag this thread for staff so they can follow up on why you can’t get two-step verification to activate. I don’t use it at all (I’ve seen too many threads by users who got locked out of their accounts because of it), so I don’t have the experience or knowledge to help you troubleshoot the problem.
Please be patient while waiting for staff to reply.

Hi @jmndotme: The number you’re attempting to setup Two Step Authentication with is showing as invalid in our system. This could be a glitch on our end but, to be sure, could you double check the number you entered here:
https://wordpress.com/me/security
I’ve also passed this onto our team to dig into deeper.

Hi there!
Following on from this, we found that you’d included your country code, + 61, in the phone number field when attempting to verify via SMS. It’s not required for you to manually enter the country code into that box, you just need to select it from the ‘Country Code’ dropdown menu. Could you try again without the country code? Let me know how that goes. :)

Hello siobhyb: I’ve corrected my phone number and am still waiting for the code, now some….umm…24mins later! LOL. The phone is switched on. I know it works as recently I had to reset my Windows phone and re-do the two-step process with them.
Secondly, I hope you’ll remove that link to my site, please!!
-
@jmndotme: Could you try without the 0 at the start of your mobile number, also? As you’ve selected your country code from the dropdown menu, we’ll use that at the beginning of the number you enter into the box, and so the 0 isn’t needed.
You may also have received an SMS from us as our team was testing this. Let me know if this helps or if you’re still not receiving the text.
Also, just to confirm @kokkieh’s note that the link I gave was a generic link that won’t give anyone else access to your site’s settings.

Hi there.
When going through the steps to setup two-step verification via SMS, can I check that you’re reaching the screen shown in the following screenshot:
It’s a little counter intuitive as you would have already entered your mobile number at the point of reaching that screen, however, an SMS isn’t sent until the ‘Send SMS’ button is clicked on on that page. Could you let me know if that button’s been clicked on? Thanks!
-
@siobhyb: Thanks for your suggestions. I have been occupied elsewhere in the meantime.
I did receive your test SMS with code. Today I have just completed the verification process and got my backup codes too. Thanks so much for your help. It is amazing what a simple thing like a zero can do!
Cheers, janina -
I’m so glad to hear that you’re up and running now, Janina. :) If you have any other questions, you know where to find us.
