two suggestions

    I have 2 suggestions,
    1. As a screen reader user, I need all the commands associated with screen readers available. However, when viewing a page on these forums, it’s kind of difficult to jump to an edit box. The universal shortcut to jump to any edit box in a screen reader is simply the letter E. However, when pressing the letter E on any wordpress.com forums page, it automatically activates the news link. This needs to be fixed. The shortcut could be changed to Alt E, or maybe alt N for news and alt E for features.
    2. I think wordpress.com should give us as bloggers access to the BBPress software that powers these support forums. There seems to be at least somewhat of a demand for the ability to create forums on our blogs. I am not one of these bloggers at the moment, in fact I’m really not sure what I want to do with my wordpress.com site at the moment, but here is probably just a small sample of the threads that are asking about how to add a forum to a wordpress.com site.

Updating to add the modlook tag to this thread. Pressing E from the top of the page still kicks me to features instead of taking me to an edit box.

Blogger have been making this same request for many years now. While waiting you have three free workaround forum options: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/23/wordpress-com-forum-options/
One approach is to register a forum on the internet and then create a custom menu in your blog and include a custom link to the forum in it.
a custom link to the forum in it.

TT, I know that and have posted similar instructions in the forum threads I’ve linked to. My problem with this is why should we be forced to use workarounds if we’ve been asking for this feature for years? In case you didn’t notice, I linked to 3 different threads in my original post asking the exact same question, and I’m sure you can find several more.

    Hi Bob,
I didn’t have time to read what you linked to as I’m multitasking from my business while supervising. I guessed it might be threads I had posted into but did not have the time to confirm. Do be aware that
The suggestions we post into this Ideas Forum are rarely responded to by Staff, let alone, acted upon.

Our current infrastructure doesn’t really support large numbers of users running bbpress forums on WordPress.com, and to set something like that up would be a major undertaking.

If you would like to have your own forums, you might want to either set one up separately by going to http://bbpress.org/ for the software, as timethief suggested, or build your site on a self-hosted WordPress install and incorporate bbpress into it.

As for the keyboard shortcut to get to the edit button, that’s an interesting idea, and I appreciate your reasoning behind it, but that would require modification of the forums code, which is not something we’re tackling right now. The edit option is available by keyboard, tabbing through the options, and while that may not be ideal, it does work.

It’s possible we’ll have an overhaul of the forums software in the future, and if that happens, perhaps things will become a bit more accessible.
