Two widgets won’t display
-
Have had difficulties with widgets & new block editor. When I add the ‘follow’ button and ‘google translate’ they do not appear. I select pages to show on etc & save same as have with the other widgets but these two… sometimes they display, then next thing they’re gone again. (Block editing seems so touchy & sensitive… I think the old one was simpler).

Hi,
There’s a Google Translate Widget in the footer widget area on the homepage, and on every other static page and archive page that I checked. If you’d like to move it to another widget area, then please follow the instructions in the Move Blocks Between Widget Areas section of the Widgets support page.
I was able to add each of these widgets to a sidebar widget area on a test site, though I share your opinion on block editing. What happened when you tried to add the Follow Button Widget?

Hello there,
Many thanks for reaching out.
I can see the follow blog widget has been added but not the Google Translate – In which widget area has this been placed?
(Block editing seems so touchy & sensitive… I think the old one was simpler).
We hear you, but in this case, I think the issue is the theme. The theme in use is TwentyFourteen, which is very old and will face issues with newer technology.
I hope this helps.

Thank you all for your friendly help.
I have managed finally to reinstate the follow button.
I used to have one that said sign up with email but that went a while back too.The translate one, it has now disappeared again!
When I say sensitive, when I think I have everything in order again, then save it, randomly some widgets seem to disappear. Which makes me hesitant to meddle further. I am wishing I left the old widgets as they were… it was in the process of removing dead videos etc that it all went wrong in the first place.
Is changing themes straightforward aleone89? Another issue I know.
For the minute I’ll leave the translate for tomorrow when my patience is refreshed! Thank you again.

It looks like it should be there, but I’m not too sure why it isn’t showing unfortunately! We may need to investigate a little further on that, I don’t have a good answer for why it’s disappeared just yet.

When you change themes that generally affects your widgets – the rest of the content would not have any issues with having a new theme applied to it, but the availability of widget areas such as your current sidebars is very much dependent on the theme you choose. If you like your current sidebars then that’s something to keep in mind if you do wish to change, since you do usually need to re-add widgets to the new theme’s sidebar area, if available.
Was there any sort of theme you were thinking of swapping to? Feel free to let us know and we can check if we have any suggestions for how to ease the process.

@staff-95percentghost,
It looks like it should be there, but I’m not too sure why it isn’t showing unfortunately!
According to the Footers section of the Infinite Scroll support page:
If you are using an Infinite Scroll enabled theme that has active footer widgets, you will see a “Load more posts” below posts instead of Infinite Scroll.
That section should also mention that, if I recall correctly, Infinite Scroll hides widgets in footer widget areas.
On the Twenty Fourteen theme the button is “Older Posts” instead of “Load more posts,” but the behavior, each click of the Older Posts button adding another page of posts, clearly indicates that Infinite Scroll is enabled.

Hi @musicdoc1, I observed that the Google Translate widget was placed in the sidebar, and not the footer :) That’s why I’m not too sure why it doesn’t show up. However it is always useful to keep in mind that Infinite Scroll will indeed affect the visibility of footer widgets in general.

Update: I think I found why it’s not showing – the visibility settings are putting conditions on when the Google Translate widget can appear.
To resolve this, I do strongly recommend either removing the visibility conditions altogether, or unchecking the “Match all conditions” box:
These conditions are currently “match all” meaning that the widget will only show on a page which is both the News page, and the front page, and the Posts page, and a category page, all at the same time – there isn’t any page which is all of those at once.
With that box unselected, the conditions become “or”, meaning that the widget will show if a visitor is looking at the News page, or the front page, or Posts, or any category page.
There’s more information about the widget visibility here:

@staff-95percentghost,
Nice catch on the visibility settings! : )

Thanks. But it’s also specifically relevant in this case, because ~32 hours ago, as I reported in my first post in this topic, the Google Translate widget was observed (by me) in the footer widget area. However, I should have directed the info on the Infinite Scroll effect to @jcrv99, not to yourself. : )

Update:
My testing on a site with Twenty Fourteen applied indicates that I was mistaken on multiple points:
1. The behavior “each click of the Older Posts button adding another page of posts” that I’d said above indicates Infinite Scroll being enabled, actually indicates that it’s not enabled in this case, because if it were enabled the number of posts being added would (I think) be 7. whereas here each click adds another 30. So it appears that the posts per page setting is 30, and Infinite Scroll is disabled.
2. Infinite Scroll being enabled did not, in my tests, cause footer widgets to be hidden on the Twenty Fourteen theme. In fact, I’ve just run tests on several different older themes and found none where Infinite Scroll being enabled caused the footer widgets to be hidden. I wonder, however, if the number of published posts, which was small in each of my tests, might have been a factor.
I’d remembered that the hiding of footer widgets by Infinite Scroll being enabled had been a problem in the past, and found (yesterday) some forum topics where the issue is acknowledged by staff. Perhaps the issue has been corrected across WordPress.com themes.

Thank you again for your replies, unfortunately I’ve been unwell for a few days but will look at this properly again tomorrow. Re the infinite scroll though musicdoc1 … I’m not aware I checked anything regarding the scroll & certainly with my attempts to reinstate the google translate to where it was originally, on the side column at the top … it obviously ended up at the bottom of the page. I’ve been unable to get it back still to the side column. However as stated I will have another attempt tomorrow. Kind regards

Hi 95percentghost … finally I have today managed some success with these, and the translate widget is now on the content side bar. Whew. I have one more question though. When choosing visibility (which it does indeed seem to be where I go wrong) … if I want a widget to appear on every static page do I need to individually select each one? There are very many on the site. There seems not to be a selection of just ‘static pages’.

Hi. No that’s not necessary. Here are three alternatives:
Show everywhere the widget is allowed:
If you want the widget to show everywhere that it’s allowed to be displayed, which includes the following:- content types: posts, pages, projects, and media (I guess the last means media attachment pages), and
- archive pages: category, tag, date, author, and taxonomy
then no rule needs to be set. It will automatically display at all the allowed locations.
Show on static pages only:
To show the widget only on static pages, the correct visibility setting would be “Show if Page is Page.” The first “Page” in this statement really stands for “content type,” which includes the types post, static page, portfolio project, and media. The second “Page” specifies the type.Show on front page (homepage) and static pages, only:
To show it on the homepage and on static pages, two rules must be set. The one described above, and another where you would specify that it “Show if Page is Front Page.”When multiple rules are set, a “Match all rules” toggle will automatically be included below the last rule. Leave it toggled off in your case, because the homepage isn’t a static page, so you don’t want both rules to be applied simultaneously.
I trust that staff will correct me if I’ve made any mistakes. : )

@musicdoc1 Your answer looks great to me :D
@jcrv99 I’m glad the widgets are showing up now! -
musicdoc1 …
“If you want the widget to show everywhere that it’s allowed to be displayed, which includes the following:

Yep, that’s correct, if you want a widget to display in all the locations that the theme displays that particular widget area. Rules set by the theme designers can limit where it displays on the theme, but I didn’t find any such rules for Twenty Fourteen.
(How do I tag my reply & quote?)
The forum topic windows are always in HTML mode. The allowed HTML tags and attributes are listed under each reply window. Regarding quoting, the “code” tab in the menu above the window produces blockquote. Just highlight and copy the section of text to be quoted, paste it into the reply window, highlight it again, and click the “code” tab in the menu.
Corrections/clarifications to my previous post:
What I called “content types” is called “post types” by WordPress.com in the visibility settings of widgets. The phrase “content types” isn’t used there. Also, there are other “Pages” that aren’t “post types” or “archive pages,” including Front page, Posts page (blog page), 404 error page, search results, and individual static pages. It’s not clear to me what some of the “Post type Archives” types listed in visibility settings refer to. : ) -
So visibility settings are only to be used to limit where you want a widget to display, whether by using the “Show if” or “Hide if” options. If you don’t want to make such limiting rules, then ignore visibility settings.
