.txt files on WordPress?

  Why are txt files not allowed as uploadable media?

  I would like to be able to write scripts for the R math progamme and upload them so that others can download them to run them on their computers. The problem in putting them into posts and/or comments is that the simple quotation marks get replaced by fancier ones which the R programme does not recognize as being the same requiring extra effort from the end user to locate and replace them before the script becomes workable.

  Does anyone know of a workaround to that problem?
