Typeface problem for some readers on Windows

  • Unknown's avatar

Two readers reported to me today that the font for my blog looks disconcertingly odd on Windows.

    See this photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ensmingr/16691321970/.

I am using a customized Oulipo theme (premium), Brandon Grotesque for heads and Puritan for body text. I believe the problem is only with Puritan, but I am not sure as I have not seen these on a PC. Everything looks fine on my Macs – using Safari, FF, and Chrome.

Why is this happening and what can I do about it?

    Thanks.

    Hey Barbara,

First, let me tell you, I love your most recent post. So do my colleagues. We hope lots of people read it :)

Next, I’ve done some testing on Mac and Windows environments, and your fonts look great. I suspect the issue is a browser problem they’re having when it comes to the rendering of your True Type fonts.

If you would like to delve further, please tell me the Windows version, and the browser type/version, these folks are using. If they’re not certain, they can click the link below to find out:

You can also have them contact us directly, and we can troubleshoot to issue with them, so you don’t have to play middleman!

    Thanks much.

    Robyn,

Thanks for checking this out for me and for offering to pursue the problem further with the two readers who mentioned this problem to me.

I appreciate the explanation and the whatsmybrowser link.

    Glad you liked the post.

    Robyn,

One reader wrote back after I sent him your testing results:

“My browsers are all up-to-date and I am running Windows 8.1 (also up-to-date). This problem also occurs in other Windows computers. Just look at your page with different browsers and OSs at browsershots.org.

    An interesting puzzle to solve!”

I cannot get broswershots.org to work correctly. I works like malware adware … Can you help?’Thanks.

    Hi Barbara,

    Thanks for this added info!

I would like to do a compare/contrast of what your reader is seeing, versus what you are seeing.

What I need in order to do that is a screenshot from your reader, and a screenshot from you.

You can simply upload the screenshots to your Media Library, like any other images, and I’ll be able to access them from there.

The page at the following link has some helpful tips for taking screenshots:

    Take a Screenshot

Just let me know when there’s something I should look at!

Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

    hi Robyn,

Peter E. wrote me a few days ago that this problem seems to now be resolved. He had been doing some tests on various Windows browsers.

I put two jpgs up in my Media Library “BadFont” and GoodFont” — you can see what folks meant if you look at bowl letters, especially the b’s and d’s.

Peter assumed something was changed/updated at WordPress. Any ideas what happened?

    Thanks so much.

    Hey Barbara,

Very interesting! It appears as if there was a conflict between the b’s and d’s on your WordPress.com site and the browsers on specific PCs. I’m actually not certain where the conflict existed, and if it was cleared up during one of our updates, or during a Windows update…or both.

I’m glad all is resolved…please let me know if it happens again. Now I’ll have data to share with our developers, if need be. But, let’s hope that I don’t need to share it with them again!

Thanks so much for the follow up. Drop me a note if the issue arises in the future.

    Cheers :)
