Typing Box Keeps Lengthening

  • Unknown's avatar

The box that I’m typing in keeps lengthening, and it’s gotten so long that I can no longer see the scroll bar, some of what I’ve typed, and it’s making it impossible to keep writing. What is going on and how do I fix it? When I click on the first sentence of my blog post as I’m typing, then the box resizes itself back to normal, but when I scroll down and click at the bottom of the blog to continue it, then it just gets really long again.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Could you let us know exactly which box you’re typing in? Want to know if it’s a comment box, in the dashboard, new post, new page, etc. A link to the page you’re on when this happens would suffice.

Second, let us know what type of browser and computer you’re using. Hopefully we can figure out what’s going on for you.

It’s in a new page. I’m on a dell laptop and I’ve tried internet explorer, firefox, and google chrome and it happens in all of them. Would screenshotting it help?

  • Screenshots could definitely help us track it down. Have you seen this happen on any other sites, or does it happen when you type in the text box here in this forum?

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s only ever happened when typing in that box. It doesn’t even happen when I type in other new page boxes, just that one.

    Screenshot of it above.

@inateyou, notice in the bottom border of the editor text box, all the span tags listed? You have some issues with the HTML in that post. First off, go to settings > writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and click save. Now open that post, and switch to the HTML tab and then back to the Visual tab. That should remove all the extra span tags that are piled up. I’m sure they are what is causing the issue for you.

If that doesn’t work, then you will have to go into the HTML tab and remove all the opening and closing span tags

    <span> and </span>

  • Unknown's avatar

That didn’t work. So do I delete every single thing that has span in the tag? There’s some that just say span, and then some say span style.

Delete ALL tags with the word span in them, whether they have more or not. And in future, try to paste things only as plain text; that’s what caused this in the first place. It’s a classic problem that we see all the time.

  • It looks like something you copy and pasted into the box made it all wonky.

Switching between the “Visual” and “HTML” tabs to the top right of the post box allow you to see what’s going on behind the scenes. If you paste something while in HTML mode it will come in as plain text, and then you can go back to “Visual” to format it, add images, and generally spruce it up.

Thank you for getting the screenshot, it made the problem a lot more obvious.

No its just WP I think it gets so overloaded at times, I have had it happen, best to go to the little like a tv screen box, right under”visual” (toggle between full screen), click it and do your typing then click it back to save, be warned though that at times WP just seems to slip spacing in and gaps between paragraphs and frustrates the hell out of even super mortals.
Their editor leaves some to be desired sometimes

Uh, no. It was an error introduced by the blogger, who has an unclosed tag because of a copy/paste. There is no question whatsoever about that.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well Id have to question that as I have had it happen quite a few times whilst just adding text, and have had it double up soooo much html code for no reason its crazy, like put in the font and font size 6 times and 10 lines of span div strong span etc, I have spent time setting it all up taking out gaps, then save and view and its got some paragraphs in there 14 times, frustrating.

  • Unknown's avatar

Question it all you like, it’s because of an unclosed code tag.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s weird though, because I never copied/pasted anything, I typed everything in myself.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s possible that when you deleted something using the visual editor that the cursor wasn’t where it appeared to be and so you erased a closing tag by mistake.

Most commonly it happens around pictures with captions, but there are other ways the visual editor gets tripped up as well.

  • Unknown's avatar

This isn’t necessarily something the OP did. Sometimes the editor simply goes off its medication and wigs out. I’ve had it add errant lines of code on me when writing a post as well. Why it does that I don’t know.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh, yes, that Visual Editor does play tricks.
