Typing in editor has become sooo slooow

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve had a problem for a while now. At first it was only when using Chrome browser. I would type some words and the editor would be about 3 words behind in catching up with my typing. Firefox was fine, but now it’s started in Firefox too. It means I can no longer type up a blog post directly in the editor, I have to type it up elsewhere then copy and paste it to my blog. Not ideal at all. I’ve just updated one of my pages in my blog and it’s taken an age. I literally typed a sentence, then sat and watched while it played catch up on what I’d just typed. It’s driving me nuts now.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey there,

That sounds like really strange behaviour – do you have a link to a page or post where this is happening?

Also, can you tell me if you have any adblocking software installed, or anything virus related?

Lastly, what is the operating system and version in use?

    Hi.

I have just tried it again now before replying. First I’m using my chromebook to reply to you in this message and the typing is absolutely perfect and is keeping up with my speed letter by letter. I have just tried a new draft post using my chromebook and it is quite slow. I typed “about four or five words behind what I’m typing”. all those 9 words between the speech marks and none of it appeared on screen until I stopped typing.

On Firefox it is slightly better and does just about keep up with my typing, perhaps a couple of letters behind. However the page I was updating last night, and have just tried it again now is incredibly slow. It types about 1 character perhaps every 2 seconds (really slow) Here is the link to the page My Bookshelves

So I use Firefox (up to date version) on a Mac OS el Capitan 10.11.6. I appreciate that is pretty old but it has always worked with wordpress absolutely fine up until the last couple of months.

On my chromebook I use the Chrome browser and the chromebook is running Chrome OS 107.0.5304.92

Chrome has been slow in the editor on wordpress for quite some time, but on Firefox the problem is more recent. I don’t use any adblocking software, certainly not that I am aware of anyway. Possibly Chrome might have it built in, I’m not sure on that. Just to note, I don’t have this time lag on typing in any other application I use on either computer, it only happens in the WordPress editor.

  • Okay, those details are helpful. Thank you.

I have a few suggestions and questions.

    – Have you tried using Chrome browser on the Macbook as well?

    – In the Firefox browser, try disabling all of your extensions or add ons.

    – could you copy + paste the browser bar address of where you’re at when the problem occurs in the next reply here.

    – The current operating system was released on September 30, 2015. You are correct in identifying that it’s quite old. I’ll try and see if I can find any other reports with this operating system so we at least know if this is the problem.

I’ve tried using Chrome on the Apple desktop. It was the same, although Chrome tells me it won’t offer any further updates because of the obsolete operating system on my computer. But it was no different anyway. I have also just now tried:

    • A different blog with a different theme – still the same
    • I tried Safari but WordPress said some themes might not work properly with an outdated version of Safari so I didn’t bother trying it.
    • I have tried it on my husbands Chromebook which has exactly the same version of Chrome OS as my chromebook. Painfully slow.
    • I have tried it on a Windows 10 laptop both on Firefox and MS Edge. That was really incredibly slow. The operating system on that is fully up to date as are the browsers.

Typing this message to you on here on my faithful old Apple desktop is absolutely fine. The only place I am having problems with lagging when typing is in WordPress. I can only think that the WP editor has become so big that is it using all the memory up on all the computers I am trying and coupled with the memory the browser uses, it’s all too much and that is what is causing the lag. I can’t really post a link other than the one in my previous message as it’s in draft. So you wouldn’t be able to see a draft post because it’s not published?

  • Hi there,

One thing I am curious about, are all these devices connected to the same wifi network? What you are describing sounds like it could be related to the speed and/or latency of your internet connection.

With this in mind, can you run the following network test to check your connection speed: http://www.speedtest.net/

Can you tell me the results you get for:
    – Latency (ping)
    – Download speed
    – Upload speed

Also, if you connect your laptop or chromebooks to a different network (workplace, local cafe or library, etc.) do you notice any speed difference with the editor?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Hi, thanks for your reply. I did wonder about this myself. I’ve done the speed test

    Results: Latency – Idle 7 Download72 Upload 15
    Download 37.17mbps
    Upload 9.20Mbps

The thing I found interesting was the speed checker said I was with TalkTalk (ISP). We buy our internet connection via an intermediary provider and when I joined up with them over 12 months ago they said their provider was EE. So it’s possible they’ve changed who they provide the connection via which would possibly explain why this seems to be a recent problem I have with the WordPress editor. Though haven’t noticed any slowing down of the internet using anything else. Even streaming is OK. But I assume when using the WP editor its the upload speed that counts. However I use Google docs online as a word processor and I don’t have any problems with lag with that.

I would have to wait to be able to try WordPress using a different network but I will try it when I get chance.
