UK Bereavement charity seeks WP guru for few hours rescue mission

    Hi Guys

We’ve been rather badly let down by our web volunteer and we need to move the WP website from one hosting company to another.

We’ve had help getting all the required files zipped to the new site, but as we’re a micro charity and do not possess the server skills needed to get it all working. I’m sending out a call for help here to see if any experiences WordPress fanatics with (LAMP?) experience can help us with what we understand is probably just a few hours work, that will allow us to continue helping those bereaved by traumatic loss.

Let me know if you can help?

    Dom & Halani

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    *** IMPORTANT ***
For some reason this forum web-page automatically adds that very tiresome footnotes. We do NOT need help with that blog weblink (but there is no way to edit a post NOR stop it from being added)

So please ignore that weblink – its wrong, and its unhelpful to have bene hardcoded into the post.

It looks your site is using the open source wordpress.org but you are on the forums for websites running on the wordpress.com platform. That’s why you see that “tiresome, unhelpfull” weblink.
    Support a wordpress.org website is at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

Yes as I say StarrtMees that is not the site we are talking about – if you check my post you will see that I have had to explain that Wirdpress forums places that link into my post and I cannot remove it or edit it – so it is very misleading.

Do you think you might have time to help with the actual charity website? Do let me know.

    Dom

(and if you know the magic secret to being able to EDIT ones posts that would be much appreciated – to avoid others being confused by the way the WP forum hard codes wrong links into the posts)

to avoid others being confused by the way the WP forum hard codes wrong links into the posts

Note that it isn’t the wrong link. It is the site associated with this WordPress.com account you are using that you created less than an hour ago. You haven’t even revealed the right link but it sounds like your site will be using the WordPress.org software, which is something this the majority of people with sites hosted at WordPress.com don’t use and so consequently can’t help you with.
You can register an account at the correct support forum here: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Hi Magic Robot

Yes thats right, when I created a sign in for the forum I was forced to create a wordpress blog.

So as before, can I also ask you if *you* would be willing to help?

The first stage is finding someone that thinks they *might* be able to help – to then establish a discussion with them about the nature of the project and then go from there.

So are you saying I have to register on a *different* forum now? (You have suggested two different links – are they related) this is starting to become – if I may say – more pain, than progress, especially when I followed the “want to get volunteer help with your website” link on the main website page…

Hopefully someone somewhere will see this post and say “Yes, you need help with WP software on a server – that is very clear – how can I help?”

I’ll look out for those posts – and better to ignore unrelated debates

    Dom

Hi there, Sorry for your troubles. Are you moving your current site to our platform here on WordPressdotcom? If so, WordPressdotcom is mostly a DIY environment that provides its users with information to help them create their own website.

If you are looking to set up a site using the open source WordPress software, you can try posting at the support forums for that software and/or post your job listing at
https://jobs.wordpress.net and https://jetpack.pro where they have more experience working with the open source WordPress software.

The link that @themagicrobot provided you explains the differences between WordPressdotcom (where we are ) and WordPress and may help to provide clarity https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Best wishes.

@ukbasedcharity Just adding that it would help us if you could post a link to the page where you saw

especially when I followed the “want to get volunteer help with your website” link on the main website page…

so we can determine what page you were on at the time. That might also help us to help you. Thanks.

    Hi All,

I think I could spend the rest of my life explaining that the site that needs help is not the one “hard coded” not by me – into the original post.

There is no link to view the website because the website is having technical issues (the reason we’re hear asking for any help)

If you would like to sonider helpinf us out of hole rather created by an unreliable volunteer – then we would be very grateful of hearing from you whereupon all and any questions will be answered (just not here)

The best way to do that is with a quick skype hello chat, or voice call – the skype ID is dom-london (listed under New York – but I am based in the UK, I signed up for skype when teaching at NYU – thats all)

Thanks – give the repeated same questions in this post – please forgive me if I now leave it for people to offer help in the channel above. We would be very grateful.

    Thanks

Hello again, it is clear from your above replies that the site that was automatically listed in your first post is not the site you need help with.

As you are not setting up your site here on WordPressdotcom, we cannot help you here further with this topic. We’ve provided a link for better understanding (com vs org) and a couple of links to places where you can post your volunteer request.

I’ll go ahead and close this thread to further replies. Best wishes.
